Could the source of these apparently poor fakes be someone in league with Bush? Give then some line, let the press run with it a bit, then set the hook by demonstrating it to be unequivocally a fake. It would discredit all attacks on Bush.

This may or may not be the case here.

However, as I'm sure you are aware, this wouldn't be the first time this type of scheme were used. Even if this were true in this specific case, it's very possible that it was done without the knowledge of the person or subject in question.
