WASHINGTON AP) - The Bush administration differed Tuesday with Russian President Vladimir Putin and said that only a political settlement could end the crisis between Russia and the breakaway region of Chechnya.
The administration also left open the possibility of U.S. meetings with Chechens who are not linked to terrorists.
Secretary of State Colin Powell and Deputy Secretary Richard Armitage signed a book of condolences at the Russian Embassy over the deaths of at least 330 people, most of them children, during a hostage-taking last week at a school in the southern city of Beslan.

There are a lot of murdered school children that say he hasn't beem oppressing them enough.
He should oppress them to the point that the hightest point in Chechnya is two grains of sand on top of each other.
By "oppressing" them , do you mean he is not letting them kill whomever they please?
I saw the pictures of the children.
And as far as separists movements --- since you seem to think the slaughter at the school is only just that --- Canadians see one with Quebec --- no murders of children by the people of Quebec --- so as far as I can see the people of Chechnya are too savage to have a nation.
We've lost 1000 young men and women in Iraq doing some nation-building which I think most of us know isn't going to really work. The minute we try to leave, all hell breaks lose between the various Muslim groups ---after they kill all the non-Muslims.
Yet we're insisting the Russians not defend themselves?
While the rapes were going on, the Russians taunted the village men, challenging them to come defend the woman.
The sixty plus men who tried, were tied to an all-terrain vehicle, and raped.
Now FITZ...are you defending the actions of the Russian Army?
You want more examples of Russian atrocities in Chechnya?
Do you know about the mass graves?
Are you excusing the mass murders of Chechens by Russians because Muslims have committed atrocities elsewhere?
Yes, and as I've repeatedly said, the terrorists acts in that Russian school are an inexcusable atrocity unto themselves...but Russia does not get a pass on their actions.
But since you brought Canada up...show me the mass graves in Quebec.
There aren't any, are there?
Thus far, the Canadian government hasn't set about to mass murder and brutalize the people of Quebec like the Russians have done in Chechnya.
Half of "their own" have already been killed or displaced by the Russians. The other half are fighting the Russian occupation.
You best get your head out of (fill in the blank) and figure out that RUSSIA'S actions have created a terrorist recruitment camp in Chechnya.
Jeeesh, what do have to do to get this Genie back in the bottle? See what these bogus AP stories can do? I think that was the intent.
"Check out the link below...you will see what really happened. BARRY IS A LIAR. He completely twisted the story. The point was America stood in solidarity with the Russian people."

The past 2 presidents - Bush x41, Klintoon x42 - have virulently supported Arrid-fart & Subhuman Muslim Pigshit terorists, for decades. Bush x42 continues the tradition. But I don't know why.
This is common public knowledge. If you've been here for a while, you've read it.
Deeper reason? Do you mean oil, payoffs etc?
Pls enlighten me/us, d.
No, "inside" politics!!!
Why do you suppose Aras were killing Russian children, and why do you suppose the news media is keeping that from us?
But these Arabs..er..uh... Chechen rebels -- yes that's what they are --- Chechen rebels from Saudi Arabia did not attack the Russian army, the cowards gathered up guns and attacked little school kids on their first day of school. I don't have much problem with traditional warfare --two armies fighting it out -- in fact that's kind of how the "whose land is it" question usually gets resolved. But Muslim men don't have the self-control or character it takes to train an organized army so they go after unarmed civilians especially women and children. Muslims don't deserve to win because they fight like cowards.
So America uses baby killers for diplomacy dealings? What country do you imagine we belong to then?
Ever read my post?
FITZ...inform yourself.
There were Chechens, there were Arabs, there were Russian nationals, and others.
Are you defending genocide by the Russian Army in Chechnya?
It's a simple question that you can answer with a "yes" or a "no".
That's right, like a liberal, let's make sure and excuse the actions of the terrorist scum who killed the children.
It's all Russia's fault, that's it. It was a hard life and this is what they had to do in order to get some recognition. Or, gee, times were hard and so we had no choice.
There was that vacuum you see, created by Russia, but only in chechnya did it become a portal to Hades. Now Georgia had the exact same vacuum created, but guess what - they turned to the church instead.
You are really making very pitiful arguments here. There have been lots of hard times throughout history and some people, like the Greek teacher, were able to become heroes and Godly. Others, like the chechens, became scum lowlifes instead.
That's yet more lack of knowledge in your part. I posted the lead story from every major media outlet in the US the day all Hell broke loose, and they all reported the fact that there were Arabs among the terrorists.
MSNBC, ABC, CBS, CNN, FOX...all of them.
I posted segments of the stories and links and they all reported the presence of Arabs.
Let's talk about the behavior of the chechens instead. You seem to think they bear no responsibility for their own actions. It was always someone else's fault that they killed, tortured, kidnapped children and mutilated them, etc.
Yes, it is Russia's fault, and now we have to clean after the damned Russians.
I LIVED under Russian occupation in Cuba, and I KNOW what they do.
The Russian Army is committing genocide in Chechnya.
Why don't you address that point?
Guess what? They were all RUSSIANS.
