The preferred approach would be a leading question (it is after all cross-examiniation)

Actually, a "why" question usually cuts through the BS.

but if that is how you want to do it . . . how about this:
Senator: "Why do you persist in claiming we are in a bad economy when inflation is under control and unemployment is the lowest it has been in over five years?"
You see, by asking "why" it opens the door to whatever cockamamie explanation or twisted argument the libs can concoct. And they are real good at that
