MIAMI (AP) _ Small toys showing an airplane flying into the World Trade Center were packed inside more than 14,000 bags of candy and sent to small groceries around the country before being recalled.
Lisy Corp., the wholesaler that distributed the candy, said Friday that the toys were purchased in bulk from a Miami-based import company. The toys came in an assortment purchased sight unseen from L&M Import in Miami and included the toys depicting the Sept. 11, 2001, attack on the twin towers, whistles and other small toys, said Luis Pedron, Lisy's national sales manager. The invoice said the toy was a plastic swing set. ``I hate to blame the importer. He probably did not know what he was getting. He brings them in 40-foot containers. But whoever made it knew exactly what they were making,'' Pedron said.
Pedron said Lisy did not notice the small plastic figurines until two people complained, but there is no mistaking what the toys represent: At the bottom of each is the product number 9011. ``When we found out what happened, we recalled them immediately,'' said Pedron, who said the toys do not reflect the company's view. ``I was offended by them.''
The company's 100 distributors sent out the candy bags. Most are sold to small Hispanic and Mexican groceries, Pedron said. He estimated about 90 percent of the bags have been collected.
Anna Rodriguez, who bought a bag of the candy for her grandson, said she was stunned when she saw the toy. ``It makes me angry,'' she told television station WFTV. ``I was offended because I couldn't believe that someone would give something like that to a kid.''
Pedron said he is saving the toys to return to the distributor. A woman who answered the telephone at L&M and refused to give her name said Friday she did not know anything about the toy.
I guess people no longer become "pissed-off."
china hehe
Made in China, packaged in Mexico shipped to Miami. Helping the third world wherever we can...
So much for capitalism. eh?
BTTT
EBay has a policy against selling recalled toys, so for better or for worse I am sure they will stop any auctions for this that come up. That policy was intended to keep dangerous toys off the market but clearly it will be applied here since the item is controversial.
While this item is of shoddy quality and distributing it to children is a tasteless disgrace, trading it on the secondary market is a completely different story. This has become and is likely to always be a true collectible with genuine historical, kitsch, and shock value. There should be no ban on dealing for the item. I would absolutely love to have one in my collection because of its bizarre nature and the controversy that it's created. However, if it was in every Toys "R" Us in the country for a buck, I wouldn't want it. Understand the difference? It has become a collectible. You shouldn't have some knee-jerk reaction that assumes people are bidding on this now because they want to celebrate the tragedy. People want it among other reasons because it's something they can show to other people that has a story behind it and which will never be available to buy again.
As for "profiting off the tragedy," weren't a lot of commemorative coins and other products featuring the World Trade Center sold after 911? This is a conservative forum and capitalism should rule the day. The exchange of goods and services and money is nothing more than one person saying they are willing to do work to get something they want from somebody else. The products would not be sold if someone didn't want to own them. Why should there be a judgment applied to what someone wants to own? I will never understand why someone is offended by what other people choose to buy and sell from each other.
Tht would be THE question.
Why would they be worth so much money? Who would want to pay so much?
So you would support the selling of body parts from the WTC? That's "capitalism" too.

What a ridiculous argument. First of all, don't put words in your opponent's mouth, it makes you look foolish. Second, selling a plastic toy vs. selling human body parts are such extreme examples, it is laughable to even compare the two. And finally, your crusade to keep this toy from being sold indicates that you should go see your doctor... get that jerky knee checked out.
You're the one who first introduced the ridiculous shibboleth of "capitalism" into the discussion. You reap what you sow.

See above.
Second, selling a plastic toy vs. selling human body parts are such extreme examples, it is laughable to even compare the two.
Both are in remarkably poor taste, and both are against EBay's posted rules. I didn't cancel the moron's account, EBay did. All I did was report the scumbag for violating EBay's rules. Go whine to EBay, not me.
And finally, your crusade to keep this toy from being sold indicates that you should go see your doctor... get that jerky knee checked out.
Your crusade to defend a leftist creep who cynically tried to make a profit at the expense of the souls who died on 9/11 indicates that you should go see your doctor. In my opinion, the one that supplies those nice jackets where the sleeves tie around the back would best suit you.
Christ on a stick, can you be any more hysterical?
i was cleaning out my car when i saw a toy near my daughters car seat. I picked it up and saw it was a toy cell phone with a picture of bin laden. he was holding up his pointing finger, fireworks in the background, and above his pic was the word king. I asked my husband where did he get this. he was surprised to see that but then he said it was in a package with small toys and candy that he got in a spainsh store. This is the third toy to be found in FL. The first 2 was two buildings with an airplane in the middle or / and a guy (some say bin laden) in the middle with the no.9011.I was thinking about the bin laden cell phone toy. This could be a good way to get us Americans. They could be putting some types of chemicals or powder substance on this type of toy. And our kids could open it up touch it, put it to there ear, or even chew on it. Instead of them attacking us directly they could be harming our children maybe even killing them with chemicals. I mean does the gov. even know?
