I struggled against medication for my son for YEARS. I finally allowed it a year and a half ago. He is on Strattera, and it has saved our family. He was a miserable child, and now he says how much happier he is, and how he CAN control his impulses now. The stress he put the entire family under was indescribable.

Now my other children get their fair share of attention, and my husband and I actually get to spend time having fun with our son, instead of everything being a huge disaster.

Well, you may be one of the lucky ones without a misdiagnosis. Stratera is also a seemingly less harmful drug.

The big problem with Ritalin is that people tend to assume that improvement after taking it proves that the person really had ADD/ADHD. The truth is that almost ANYONE might see some benefit in focus after taking Ritalin. A friend of mine gamed the system, went seeking a diagnosis of ADD as an adult (knew how to answer all the questions), got the diagnosis, and got prescribed Ritalin - which was his goal.

How will your son learn to control his impulses without the drug? An adult trying to learn that is kind of scary.

I could have written your post 111. People who have never had a child with this condition have NO CLUE what it is like. I know, I used to be one of them. :)
