I don't believe we have conclusive evidence that he didn't miss drills. IIRC the story was he had to play catch-up in one year just to make sure he got a good year in, i.e. he must have missed some drills.
Also, if I'm not mistaken, you can't be considered AWOL unless you already signed in at drill. Missing drills does not constitute being AWOL. I sure remember a lot of guys who missed drills without getting the boot.
