Try this exercise.
Scroll back up, and read just the headline.
You now have done as much as most voters will, and you are left with the impression Keyes wants us to be able to buy an Uzi at Wal Mart.
The fact that the substance of his comments is great is more than negated by the fact he has fired off a sound bite that makes him seem to the right of the Montana Militia.
This is why he is a great man, but a lousy candidate.

I am of the express opinion that were voters really able to get a sense of the views of each of the candidates, they would choose Keyes. The media bias is an issue, but it is not insurmountable. Perhaps voters would be persuaded to read the article instead of just the headline if they weren't convinced by members of Keyes' own party that he can't win.
On the other hand, perhaps a headline like this is exactly what Keyes needs to get their attention. If that gets them to read, then perhaps it is not as damaging as you might think.

He said the 2nd protects the citizens right to carry weapons ...customarily carried in those days by ordinary infantry soldiers
He's right. Bitch at the guy who wrote the headline. What's he suupposed to do, lie?

I entirely agree. I don't care if he loses. He is right. It is better to be right than to win. That way, when the righteous win (and it may take generations), they have not whored themselves to tyranny.

With all due respect, I think you may be wrong.
Keyes is never going to get a break from the media, and he knows it. But he also knows that his opponent is going to tend to overconfidence, especially if the media continues to paint Keyes as a nutcase, and Obama as the second coming of Jesus Christ.
If and when the debates come -- and it is by no measn certain that Obama will agree to televised debates -- Keyes natural oratorical skills will be on full display. He gets to talk directly to the people, and bypass the media. I think that with the possibility of low turnout in the city, and big downstate and suburban Republican voter turnout, there is the longshot but real possibility of a Keyes win.

I'd prefer an UZI or better yet a Thompson or something else in .45 acp, that sounds pretty good to me. It is after all what Madison and the other founders, including all those that voted for or voted to ratify the second amendment intended.
