Singapore's PM Backs China Over Taiwan Independence

VOA News

22 Aug 2004, 15:37 UTC

Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has warned Taiwan against moving toward independence, saying he supports the "one China" policy.

In a National Day Rally speech, Mr. Lee said the question of Taiwan's independence is potentially the most dangerous problem in the region and could trigger armed conflict.

Mr. Lee said Singapore will not support Taiwan if war breaks out in the straits.

Relations between Singapore and China were strained last month, when Beijing protested a trip by Mr. Lee to Taiwan.

In Sunday's speech, Mr. Lee said the trip was needed to help him assess the situation in Taiwan.

"Mr. Lee said Singapore will not support Taiwan if war breaks out in the straits."

well duh - Singapore would die in hours if not minutes if China were to attack it.

" Mr. Dent, do you know how much damage this bulldozer would suffer were I to let it roll over you ? "

Don't bet on it.

There is more military might in Singapore in an average week than in "china" in a month.

B-G 'Baby-Doc' Lee is but a second-generation petty fascist, it is true, who wouldn't make mayor in Taipei -- but Uncle Sam is alive and well in every imaginable way in sunny-down-town-Singapore!

Nah.

'Duplicitous' is Baby-Doc Lee's middle name -- and he talks with greased ease from both sides of his mouth.

The USA would never go to war against China for Taiwan is how I see it. Maybe China wont start a war either. In any case America is too mixed in with China to risk a war like that.

If Taiwan reawakens the Chinese military machine... China might swallow up Malaysia and Singapore at the same time they go after Taiwan.

At least, it won't be pretty for Singapore. So they prefer to appease China, rather than risk themselves.

For being clever and prosperous, some non-China Chinese sure don't get it. Lee should ask the HK toadies "How's it workin' out for ya?"

Do not confuse President Bush, his cabinet and the Administrative branch of America's Government with the former "administration's" treasonous "man" in washington.

The predatory Peking pack's militarists are wont to make that mistake and as the consequence get to see very many USN Carrier Groups cruising through and massively changing the balance of power in what they consider to be "their" backyard.

Singapore and Taiwan are mortal enemies when it comes to trying to corner the market for export sales. Anything that might disrupt Taiwan exports is good for Singapore. Does it all make sense to you now?
Next question.

Somehow I don't think they will be sitting there in the harbor if there were any hint of military action against Taiwan...

Sure, like having mainland bosses control Taiwan's exports will help Singapore ...

The problem is the Taiwan independence movement leaders' military stratedgy is to hold-on long enough until US comes to their rescue.

They want Americans to do the fighting, and that's why they have not urgently ungraded their military, even though the communists continue to upgrade theirs.

Your fine tuning needs adjustment.

Your analagy is sitting-around-on-their-socialist-arses-Euro-peon oriented -- and you shoud be thinking Israel -- and that Nation's relationship with four hundred million enemy islamists.

Just as we indirectly assist Israel, We will help the FRee Republic of Taiwan -- but as in the case of our Israeli Allies, not as much as the attitude, actions and activities of Taiwan's determined-to-remain-FRee Men will help themselves!

Apart from the to-be-expected envy and rivalry of a behind-the-power-curve effectively petty-fascistic centrally-planned city-state/dictatorship for a Nation of FRee Men, Singapore and Taiwan are Good FRiends and are Good, Natural allies.

Of each other and of our beloved FRaternal Republic.

And as long as it is, neither Singapore nor the Nation of FRee Taiwan have any real concerns insofar as the delusional designs of Peking's psychopathological predators are concerned. Nor islam's.

One SSBN is all it takes to neutralize S'pore

Let's get real

At least, the S'poreans are a pragmatic and realistic people why do I say that?

Well, a USSR diplomat once commented this about S'pore's so-called "military might" vis-a-vis the Great Powers

He said, "all a great power ,like the US,USSR or PRC need to do to make S'pore surrender is to send a nuclear-armed sub to within a couple of hundred miles from S'pore, and get ready to unleash its SLBMs and then the leaders of this great power to telephone S'ore's PM to say "look, we have got 20 SLBMs pointed and ready to fire at you. Are you going to surrender or not???"

S'pore is just a VERY VERY VERY TINY island ,you see

Thank you for having tried to share. Sadly, though, your personal-attack-couched implication that should assume responsibility for your clearly projected inadequacies insofar as intellect, command of language, modern history and current affairs are concerned, demonstrates nothing more than your being out of your league here -- and that you would be more at home back among the DU's and move-on's et al's other fundamentally-dishonest collectivists.
