WASHINGTON - Sen. John Kerry (news - web sites)'s campaign released a video Saturday comparing the controversy over Kerry's Vietnam service to attacks on John McCain during the 2000 Republican primaries. The video, sent via e-mail to supporters, says, "George Bush is up to his old tricks" and shows then-Texas Gov. Bush and Arizona Sen. John McCain (news, bio, voting record) at a debate in February 2000.
McCain, sitting next to Bush, says that when "fringe veterans groups" attacked him at a Bush campaign function, Bush stood by and didn't say a word. McCain says a group of senators wrote Bush a letter that said: "Apologize. You should be ashamed."
McCain, also a Vietnam veteran, says Bush "really went over the line."
"I don't know how you can understand this, George, but that really hurts," McCain says.
Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, a group funded in part by a top GOP donor in Texas, has been running ads featuring veterans who served in Vietnam at the same time as Kerry and question his wartime record.
In Roanoke, Va., on Saturday, Democratic vice presidential candidate John Edwards (news - web sites) called on Bush to end the ads.
"This is a moment of truth for George W. Bush," Edwards said at a Democratic rally. "We're going to see what kind of man he is and what kind of leader he is. ... We want to hear three words: Stop these ads."
Edwards said the commercials were from "people who financed the same kind of attacks against John McCain in the 2000 presidential campaign."
The Kerry campaign has filed a complaint with the Federal Election Commission (news - web sites), alleging the Swift Boat Veterans group is coordinating its ads with the Bush campaign. The Bush campaign has denied the claim.
You miss my point. If Bush would specifically denounce the SBVFT similar to what McCain did, I would view it as a lack of character and principle on Bush's part. These are decorated veterans who have a right to express their opinion. I know the SBVFT will run the ads regardless as a matter of principle and honor.
I don't think McCain is going to go to bat for Kerry, to defend his calling our military war criminals. I just think McCain is not going to want to get involved. It is simply unimaginable that McCain will rise to Kerry's defense on that issue.
The first ad accomplished what it was meant to do. It is the second ad that is the coup de grace.
McCain tries to play up to all sides. He is like O'Reilly in that approach. But with McCain it's to be loved. O'Reilly just wants good interviews! Both want to be media stars. Similar characters perhaps?
I just saw this new Kerry ad; it's disgusting.
John McCain better denounce it.
His campaign finance reform BS has given the rats a tremendous advantage and he's not done helping them yet.
Psycho ran a slash and burn campaign for the nomination in 2000, courting democrats to vote for him in GOP primaries.
Gore would have killed him in the general.
Traitor and dupe.
My God, Bush had nothing to do with this! Bush allows the market place to work this out as he did with the Moore lies, Moveon.org, Sores and many more. He never allowed himself to go on the defensive. These guys are dredging up every trick to counteract the truth. Bush will keep above it and win!
If these cretins weren't out of their goddamned minds they wouldn't be Democrats in the first place.
Good afternoon.
McCain has painted himself into a corner. He and john kerry worked together to bury the pow/mia issue so that normalization with Vietnam could take place. That was part of the reason vets began to dislike him, along with his penchant for siding with the DemocRats too often.
He is also made to look foolish by the 527 controversy, what with CFR bearing his name.
McCain must either stand firm with President Bush or risk defeat in his next election.

---The Swifties are ultimately going to help Kerry get elected.---
Kerry's already done. It's like the Titanic with the side ripped open. Many passengers think it can't sink, but it's sinking anyway.
How about these three words?
Release your records.

Um, wasn't Kerry a member of the SwiftVets and went to the reunion?
" The reason I think they're hurting Kerry is that his campaign mode has become "illogical".
People in a panic are usually illogical.
Every day I say to myself- Didn't anybody vett this guy ?
Didn't anybody in the Democrat party bother to just read some of the interviews Kerry had given over the years ?
They were filled with inconsistencies and there were so many red flags about Kerry- I find it incredible that not one person in the Democrat Party picked up on this.
Or maybe they did ( ahem- Bill and Hillary ) and hoped that the rest of the party would be so lazy,so ignorant or so desperate-they would chose Kerry ,anyway.
I bet there is a lot of finger pointing going on behind the scenes at the DNC- " Whose idea was it anyway to pick this loser ?? "
And then I see the Chappaqua Chesire Cats smiling.
Interesting theory about some new nugget in Unfit For Command.
Every page of my book is underlined and filled with notes in the margin.
I have found that each page is a revelation and uncovers another aspect of the story we didn't previously know about.
I was stunned by the cumulative effect of Kerry's lies, fabrications and fantasies.
"John Kerry gave the enemy for free what I, and many of my comrades in North Vietnam,
in the prison camps,
took torture to avoid saying."

"Um, wasn't Kerry a member of the SwiftVets and went to the reunion?"
"Unfit For Command," Pages 3-4 :
The Swift Boat veterans gather for a 30 year reunion in 2003.
Three hundred attend.
Master of ceremonies, Dan Daly introduces various dignitaries present, to polite applause.
Daly introduces Swiftees to rousing applause and cheers.
Daly goes to microphone to signal out Senator John Kerry for recognition-dead silence follows.
Daly, embarrassed said " I guess I laid an egg with that one."
Earlier, Kerry had arrived to the reunion, with an entourage- a film crew, a corps of directors and assistants.
" Pushing aside various Swiftees, Kerry positioned himself dockside so he could be filmed on the restored PCF that was the centerpiece of the reunion."
"As was his habit, Kerry ignored many of his fellow Swiftees."
Kerry asked for volunteers for his video-most declined.
After filming the video, Kerry and his entourage left
" not bothering to attend a memorial service for the Swiftees who had died in Vietnam."
John McCain was so poor a student pilot in flight training that his instructors tried to wash him out. They were forbidden to do so because his father was a fleet admiral in the U.S. Navy. The inevitable happened, his ineptitude led to losing his plane and becoming a prisoner in North Nam..
I see this as a non issue, Bush has already denounced ALL 527s. Why should he denounce just this truthful one and not the rest of them? The Democrats and their MSM lackeys are clutching at straws here trying to save the Kerry campaign.
