Not to jink my neighbors in SW Florida but Andrew intensified when it hit here

no it didnt..in intensified just prior to landfall....a tropical system does not increase in intensity after landfall until/unless it reemerges over water...

Actually it did - a very unusual occurance

In Florida
Hurricane Andrew made landfall near Homestead AFB at 5:05 am EDT on August 24, with a central pressure estimated to be 922 mb, and sustained winds of 145 mph, classifying it as a Category 4 hurricane. Upon making landfall, Andrew temporarily intensified, due increased convergence in the core. However, during its four-hour trek across the tip of Florida, Andrew weakened about one Saffir-Simpson category, but remained a potent storm.
