Kind of surprising, seeing such a rapid jump in strength (a) this close to land (usually, a storm close to shore begins to pull in relatively "dryer" air) and (b) moving at such a rapid forward speed. Upper level conditions that push a storm forward at 20 mph are strong enough to produce some sort of shearing effect, which is not conducive to rapid strenghtening.

Must be the fact that the Gulf is just that warm right now, for one thing.

That's what it looks like; the governor of South Carolina is asking for voluntary evacuation.

North of Naples and Marco, tide coming back in..minutes, just minutes before winds shift back around on Sanibel Island, taking the direct hit in the center, over the top of Pine Island...on to Cape Coral with ferocious storm surge....145mph on the right hand side of the storm...whoo.

Watching the approach I don't think this is hype at all. God save these people...

Charleston was that way after the last big cane there (Hugo?). They found boats all over the place.

From my earlier post:

Looking at the satellite pics, the secondary effect that I don't like the looks of is that band just north of Lake Okechobee (sp?). There are probably tornadoes being spawned from that band.

It's exactly what's happening.

I think the eyewall is going to graze Sanibel - the storm is now tracking more to the north.

Not from what I'm seeing - the storm is still tracking directly at Sanibel.

NBC2/ABC7 Ft. Myers is showing local radar, and the eyewall is on their close-up view.

Sometimes people on this board say the most astonishingly stupid things. This is a jaw dropper. Please save the God's wrath stuff for another time . . . my sister is in the path of this storm.

My wife and I are scheduled to fly down from Ohio to Ft. Myers next Saturday. A close college friend of hers is seriously ill with cancer, and we are going to spend some time with them. My wife spoke with them Wednesday night, and they were well-stocked with supplies and ready to ride things out. Hope they don't lose power for too long.

I've lived on the Gulf Coast my entire life. There's no hype about a borderline Category 5 storm, none at all.

The only way this could be "worse" for Ft. Meyers (or wherever it makes landfall and just to the east of that point) would be if the storm was moving more slowly.

The surge is going to suck, as will the wind, but at least the periods of very intense rain will not be too long since the storm will clear the area within a few hours.

Oh, please...G-d is in control of EVERYTHING, and that includes hurricanes; like it or not. (Remember Noah?) My point is that we should NEVER forget that hurricanes are UNPREDICTABLE. In spite of all their expects and hi-tech equipment; the Weather Channel got caught with their pants right down around their ankles on this one with regards to the last-minute surge in strength of this storm. The Weather Channel might want to spend a LITTLE more time informing the public of the sheer unpredictability of hurricane behavior in the future.
