The National Hurricane still has landfall somewhere around or just north of Tampa, then NE out into the SE Atlantic for a time before hitting South Carolina.

If Charley does what they are forecasting, there will be major damage to parts of TPA and surrounds. They are now expecting 14'+ Storm Surges which would flod major portions of the city. It's an extremely unusual track, but appears more and more likely now.

The evacuation orders are unheard of, the largest in history. It's an amazing effort... we seem to be better at it since 9/11, it's a good sign. In the late 90's there would have been no hope of evacuating 400,000 people in 24 hours.

The water in that part of the Gulf is about as warm as it gets. Charley could regain a lot of strength (it will lose some over Cuba) before hitting the coast.

Report: Terrorists considered plan to poison water supplies
WBAY TV ^ | Aug. 12, 2004 | AP

Posted on 08/12/2004 3:07:54 PM EDT by QQQQQ

LAS VEGAS Before Nine-Eleven, terrorists discussed recruiting treatment plant workers to poison water supplies in major urban areas.

That's according to a federal bulletin sent out yesterday to law enforcement and water agencies nationwide.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal quotes the four-page document as detailing discussions by unnamed terrorists who had been under government surveillance.

But the document doesn't refer specifically to Las Vegas or any other city.

The bulletin describes the terrorists as showing "a certain degree of operational sophistication" about unsecured water facilities.

The bulletin advises authorities nationwide to adopt 15 protective measures against certain possible terror scenarios.

A county emergency management official says the bulletin was sent out to urge vigilance about employees hired at water-treatment plants.

My in-laws live on Venetian Isle in St. Petersburg. They have to leave by 6 p.m. today ... they're going to stay at his office, which is further inland.

I'm so glad I don't live in Pinellas anymore.

You said you are in Sarasota? This storm could affect you to a much greater degree than Andrew did. The angle it will be coming into the west coast is highly favorable for big storm surge. Everyone in low-lying regions should get out before the weather gets bad. The Tampa Bay makes the situation much worse because the water will just keep filling the bay (it has nowhere to go).

A Category three or greater system hitting Tampa or Just north will be very bad news IMO.

I'll stick with the 686, loaded with Remington 125 SJHP. My personal all time favorite combo.

"Another "Girlie Man" bites the dust."

Unbelievable. That brings to mind this story about the Phillies:

It's not as imposing as Andrew, but it's still scary nonetheless.

Ain't that the truth.

I wish a storm had wiped out Atta when he was taking flight lessons in Venice. The rat bastard. I hope he's enjoying his virgins in hell.

The flooding issues could be much worse this go around. Areas of Tampa Bay are not built to withstand the kind of surge they are expecting.

Most of these types of places will be heavily damaged/destroyed if the track/intensity verifies. Flood Surge is as or more damaging and deadly then wind.

That's the price these people pay for living next to the water.

They're already talking about cutting off power to some areas of Sarasota before Charley arrives.
