I wonder if that version in the bottom picture with the drum magazine is meant to replace the FN-made M249 squad automatic weapon (SAW)?

I know that the old Stoner M63A modular system made a decent LMG, but that weapon weighed almost nine pounds in infantry rifle trim, which is waaaay heavy for a 5.56mm NATO rifle. The H&K is much lighter. A SAW is meant for sustained full-auto fire, and I am doubtful the XM-8 receiver can stand up to it, even with a heavy barrel stuck in the front end. I guess our troops will be the ones to find out one way or the other.

I've been watching the XM8 on my site for a while.

Check out http://www.murdoconline.net/archives/000905.html for a summary of the weapon and a lot of excellent commentary from readers, most of whom are far more knowledgable than I am.

I've also got a category for the XM8 and XM25 grenade launcher at http://www.murdoconline.net/archives/cat_xm8_xm25.html, though there's not a lot of news on the XM25 yet.
