A pet peeve of mine also and I do about 500 miles worth of highway driving per week for a few months out of the year.
Pennsylvania has a 2 mile "cruising" limit for left lane drivers but it isn't enforced.

Amen to this post!
My pet peeve is when traffic is backed up for 5 miles, and when you get to the point of origin of the traffic jam, its because of an accident -- on the other side of the damn highway that people feel obligated to slow down and gawk at!

The problem is that too many drivers, and people in general, have no manners or consideration for others. Is it too much to ask for a person driving slower than the flow of traffic to move over one lane instead of settling in to the left? Is it too much to ask the young guy in the jacked up 4 x 4 to simply pass to the right, where there are no other cars for miles, rather than tailgate at 65 MPH flashing his brights and waving obscene gestures?
In Southern California it is impossible not to use the left lane at times for normal driving. There are just too many cars to use the fast lane only for passing.
