It is like the writer knew that he was BS ing Boston and the voting rats, and yet he felt a little guilty and compensated by dropping a few bread crumbs of truth and questioning. Then if he got caught in a mess like this, he could have a few points to show that he was still a journalist not a pulp fiction writer.
