He opposed a proposed constitutional amendment in Massachusetts in the summer of 2002 because a sweeping proposal would have threatened civil unions, health benefits, or inheritance rights for gay couples that represent equal protection under the law," spokesman David Wade said.
"John favors civil unions, not gay marriage. It's that simple," he said.

jveritas, it's crystal clear, I mean it's so obvious what Kerry's position is, we shouldn't even be having this conversation.
Most of Kerry's votes will come from his only asset - he isn't GWB. There isn't a single redeeming facter in this guy. He may be even with Bill Clinton when twisting his own on any given topic.

Kerry is never "toast" on any issue regardless of his record. The media is more than happy to help with these little annoyances.

He'll just waffle and say he signed the letter because he didn't want a constitutional amendment that could potentially ban civil unions as well.
There are always TV ads by the Bush campaign that can show Kerry incredible flip flops on this issue.
