The third PH, Gardner says he wasn't there during the incident, but is reading from Kerry's "secret diaries" (Tour of Duty) where Kerry himself writes that he got "a piece of small grenade in my ass from a rice explosion".
He was a "sensitive" and "nuanced" commander.
