Guess you haven't been reading snake's follow-ons, huh Dude?
Feel free to do so. If you want to allow media negativity and presumed perception make you feel bad, go ahead.
I'm just looking at the facts, and they don't spell the gloom that you feel. (note......FEEL).
BTW the 'experts' are saying energy futures are lower today because the slowing economy will reduce demand for oil.
"I believe, and correct me if I'm wrong, 5.5% is an estimate - right? It's based on the most recent data regarding unemployment claims. If you are unemployed and no longer eligable for unemployment, you fall off the roles are are thusly unreported. That is the beauty of estimates - you can fudge the numbers by what you can claim ignorance on and push the number off as a fact. Sounds like modern junk science."
The statement of:
"If you are unemployed and no longer eligable for unemployment, you fall off the roles are are thusly unreported."
has nothing to do with the unemployment rate as reported today:P> "People are classified as unemployed if they meet all of the following criteria: They had no employment during the reference week; they were available for work at that time; and they made specific efforts to find employment sometime during the 4-week period ending with the reference week. Persons laid off from a job and expecting recall need not be looking for work to be counted as unemployed. The unemployment data derived from the household survey in no way depend upon the eligibility for or receipt of unemployment insurance benefits."
from:
http://stats.bls.gov/news.release/empsit.tn.htm
with a determination of the classification of "unemployed" being derived from the household survey.
Did I say it was a good thing? I don't think so. I merely said 32K jobs were created. Not lost. Created. Period.
Is it below expectations? Sure. Is it worth rioting in the streets or wailing and gnashing teeth over? Lord no. I winced when I saw the number this morning, but not because I'm worried it suddenly cost Dubya the White House. It was because I knew all the Chicken Littles would be stampeding.
I don't get too excited for news like this, good or bad. It's simply not a big deal.

Good news to me.
Our "friends" on the other side of the aisle probably are deeply saddened. The numbers are still in the black.
6. If it is true that 600,000 new self-employed people came on board in July (or even in the last 3 months) it's a powerful indication that we're not all starving, we're paying our bills, and we're not becoming drags on the growing economy.
My brother-in-law was laid off from his fulltime architect job five months ago. It was a hard time. In two months, he found semi-employment doing a couple of house-plans a week for a builder (using a new Dell home computer and a $2,000 Auto-cad program), then he got 40-hour/week contractor work for another firm. He agreed to a 50-hour week as business picked up. Now he's choosing between two fulltime, permanent jobs. I'd say that we all know a few workers who've migrated to new positions in this way.
What liberal mantra? You can bet that Rove and company are not living in some fantasy world. They know what Bush needs to do to get elected and sticking your head in the sand is not one of them. As far as the failure of liberal policies, you live in Michigan, not me. You scream about them. That's your job!
It that perhaps because the people who are "seeing" - i.e. actively involved - in the overwhelmingly vibrant economy aren't screwing around day after productive day on an internet message board?
How many of the really productive, successful people in our midst are wallowing in doom and gloom every day on Free Republic?
Ping on #384...
My point was that the unemployment figure is based on the establishment survey, which asks large corporations and businesses for their payroll levels. Owners of small businesses don't show up on this survey.
How does the household survey figure in this?
Why are you sending this to me. That is what I said. There is no connection between the Household Survey and unemployment compensation.
No, no, no. The "Unemployment figure" comes from the Household Survey. Corporations report EMPLOYMENT levels. They dont know whether people other than their staffers are employed or not. If you meant "Employment" figures then I agree, small companies are not covered.
No, I haven't (300+ posts). But if he was serious, he's deluded.
I stand corrected. Thank you
Which was my point. :-)
the jobs being created are seasonal jobs...some construction, lifeguards, camp counselors, etc.
the economy is stagnant and will remain that way unless people have disposable income to either invest or buy.
this isn't something to cheer about.
"Its already two months in a row. and gas prices which caused some of the decline in growth of jobs are now back at the highest level ever, suggesting August is going to be the pits as well.'
You need another bs negative crib sheet.
Gas prices have fallen like a rock here in N Cali the past two weeks. We have gone from the 2.30/gallon for regular to $2 and even below.
You sound like another Pat Buchanananananan Doomer and Gloomer. You need some new mantras. Your gasoline one is out date.
There must be more jobs being created than are reported with immigration rates at an all time high --- with over a million people added every year, there has to be something --- I bet the jobs offered only to foreigners aren't counted and that includes many farm jobs, construction jobs, hotel and restaurant jobs.
