I can't help but think of the fates of the signers of the Declaration of Independence.

If I'm not mistaken, at least one of the signers had his sons captured by the British. They offered to let that signer's sons go, if he would renounce his support for the Declaration. He refused. His sons were executed.

Can you imagine anyone able to do that today?
