I remember back in the 2000 campaign, when rumors circulated that Cheney would "pick himself" for VEEP. He denied he was in consideration, yet ended up being the nominee.
The point is, in politics, you never know what the future will bring. A person could make an honest statement about their future in politics, and, lo and behold, do the opposite. So what? It's not unprincipled. It's politics.
