I agree. But it's old news, and so Dem-like to keep bashing on old news. Let's put that energy into moving forward: Re-electing Bush and defeating the terrorists.

So GW has been doing absolutely nothing about terrorism -- according to that empty suit Kerry and the rest of the radical Left Dims.

And so the threat of terrorism has been highly exaggerated - according to that empty suit Kerry and the rest of the radical Left Dims.

And so the NY Times has been scooped by Drudge (again).

Nonetheless, this appears to be a major alert and we are about to be hit very soon and Kudos to GW and Company (and whoever aided) for nabbing this AQ monster in Pakistan.

Let's smoke 'em out, torture them for intel, and dispose of their bodies in the nearest commode.

You publicize this so the bad guys don't know which lines of communication have been compromised. Messing with their communication system may prevent attacks and/or buy us more time.

"What purpose does it serve to be so specific? Why let the bad guys know how we know?"

Because we are dealing with a generally decentralized enemy here.

By telling what we know of their concrete plans, the decentralized cells tasked with carrying out the now-public operations will be forced to break their radio silence.

They will have to communicate back to Osama, Zawahiri, Zarqawi, or Mullah Omar for new instructions.

When they communicate, they are vulnerable. Intercepting signals is one of the few intelligence tricks that we Americans are good, no, *exceptional* at doing.

So to round up terror cells that may already be in place here in the states, we've got to convince them to break their "radio" silence. When they are silent, we've got precious little chance of catching them prior to their attacks. When they talk, not only can we track them, but we also gain clues about the locations of their leaders.

I'll bet they got the information out of this guy by plying him with peanuts and beer. And then hanging him by his thumbs from the ceiling and pouring cold water on him.

Interesting. A lengthy article on terrorism and Al Qaeda, and neither "Islam" nor "Muslim" appears once.

Asked about the whereabouts of Osama bin Laden and his deputy, Ayman al-Zawahiri, Mr. Khan has told interrogators that even the top Qaeda commanders do not know, the Pakistani intelligence official said.

Not surprising... But what is surprising is the fact that anyone would comment on this. We need to follow the bread crumbs. bin Laden may be out of active communication with his folks, but I bet he and Ayman Al Zawahiri are at least utilizing couriers as General Aideed did when we had such a hard time tracking him down in 1993.

Pehaps because it's a simple way of protecting the target. Once AQ knows that we know that they have targeted a certain location, the opperation involves too much risk to justify its continuation. OTOH, just keeping what we know secret in order to catch AQ in the act, involves too much risk for us, because we might, in fact, miss them.

Once AQ aborts a mission because it's been uncovered, they have to start from scratch with months of planning, and so forth. But, I guess the worry would be that AQ might have alternate targets, or a Plan B or C that they could execute quickly if their first choice of targets was, for some reason, not available.

Interesting. A lengthy article on terrorism and Al Qaeda, and neither "Islam" nor "Muslim" appears once.

The official said Mr. Khan had told investigators that couriers carried handwritten messages or computer disks from senior Qaeda leaders hiding in isolated border areas to hard-line religious schools in Pakistan's Northwest Frontier Province.

Jesuits? Southern Baptists? Mormons? Ultra-orthodoz Jews?

I don't have any problem with Secretary Ridge detailing specific threats. I trust Homeland Security knows what they are doing by detailing how they became aware of the threats. But I question why it's necessary to go into such detail about how much we know about Al Quaeda's communications systems. We might, as Southack suggested, be hoping they use less secure means of communication in panic. But I wouldn't bet on it.

" Don't tell anything and hope you catch them in time"

there is one theory out there that says this is exactly what happened at Oklahoma city.....that somebody was supposed to stop it before any actual damage was done..

and we all know what happened there....
