There's no question that there are flaws in the jury system. Many busy professionals and others who are in their prime employment years dodge service. So I believe juries are disproportionately made up of retirees and the unemployed, the sort who sit around watching TV all day. In my view, there is no other explanation for why somebody like John Edwards would be able to sway a jury by claiming a dead child talked to him.

But with all its drawbacks, it's far better, IMO, than a system in which some arrogant, high-handed, agenda-driven, black-robed individual seals the defendant's fate. BTW, a lot of the retirees who serve on juries are very sharp people with a lot of experience.

Yes, a lot of people who serve on juries are sharp individuals but when you have an important case that is supposed to last 6-8 months, the jury selection is widdled down to the lowest common denominator...because no one can afford to be out of work for almost a year at 10 measley bucks a day. The side that wins is the one with the best attorney...and that's all there is to it.
