Maybe, maybe not. Not clear. All that is known for sure is that he got off the chopper he picked up the grenade and it exploded.

He served, he paid a large price for doing something dumb but now he is an embittered and self deluded man who thinks he lost the Senate race for reasons other than going to liberal Washington DC and going native.

I hope Max works out his demons but I doubt he ever will.
