Friends, fellow Democrats, fellow Americans, I'll be candid with you. I had hoped to be back here this week under different circumstances, running for re-election.
But you know the old saying: You win some, you lose some. And then there's that little-known third category.
I didn't come here tonight to talk about the past. After all, I don't want you to think I lie awake at night counting and recounting sheep.
I prefer to focus on the future because I know from my own experience that America is a land of opportunity, where every little boy and girl has a chance to grow up and win the popular vote.
In all seriousness, I am deeply grateful for the opportunity you have given me to serve America. I want to to thank you as Democrats for the honor of being your nominee for president four years ago. And I want to thank the American people for the privilege of serving as vice president.
And most of all, I want to thank my family with all my heart my children and grandchildren, and especially my beloved partner in life, Tipper.
I love this country deeply, and even though I always look to the future with optimism and hope I do think it is worth pausing for just a moment as we begin this year's convention, to take note of two very important lessons from four years ago.
The first lesson is this: Take it from me -- every vote counts.
In our democracy, every vote has power. And never forget: that power is yours. Don't let anyone take it away or talk you into throwing it away.

Still can't get over it. LOOSER!
What a goofball.
Like my mom, almost always said:
America is the land where every young boy can grow up and become (someone who claims he won the race for) president.
and Ballet Boy Ron Reagan Jr. told Chrissy Matthews without being corrected that if the recount had gone on Gore would have won.
Don't know who's more delusional Gore, Chrissy, or Ballet Boy.
Nope. It would require a recount in every single county in America to prove that win. Since it is only a nominal victory (and well inside the margin of error), WHO CARES?
Gorons.
Looks like we'll need to break out the Bush County maps again.
I think they're all sniffin' from the same gas can.
"Moore-like John seat" is closer to the truth.
Throw out the felon votes
Throw out the votes from dead people
Count only one vote per person
Give the overseas ballots that weren't counted a chance to be counted
Give the panhandle folks a chance to vote if they didn't go to the polls after the media announced (prematurely) that Gore won.
My guess is that Al would lose by at least 10,000 to 15,000 votes.
YOU LOST AL GET OVER IT
I'm still waiting for Gore to splash sweat and froth at the mouth or at least Howard Dean to let out his famous yell. Hillary will just be her smarmy self--no excitement there. I suppose Teddy will give us a real stem winder tomorrow night.
If they throw out the cemetery districts in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, Florida recounts become academic.
Gore is insane!
What is it with these guys?
I thought there was going to be no "Bush Bashing"...
Gore and Carter either think people are too stupid to understand allusions or they're speeches didn't count in the no "Bush Bashing" category.
Hypocrites.
I heard the gore speech on the radio. Seemed like there was little-to-no reaction from his 2000 recount jokes. Until he started bitching about the Iraq war, you wouldn't have realized there was even an audience.
I watched his speech; a dull, boring snoozer. Only two networks of all the major and cable networks carried his speech; C-SPAN (of course) and MSNBC.
O.K. Al. It's time to go get a real job and please wash your greasy hair. I don't think it's been washed since the 2000 election.
2. Gore still doesnt get it... WE DONT WANT HIM!
3. Gore should heed the caption on his "encouragement" picture (recently posted here... wish I had saved same...):
Winners never quit.... Quitters never win
Those who never win... and never quit... are IDIOTS.
Regards...
If the politicians were really interested in campaign reform they'd start with voter fraud and the first thing to do would be to scrub the voter lists for dead people. It'll never happen the Dems need the votes and the Republicans for some reason are too timid to complain.
I'll bet AlGrrrr bee-atched when he lost at Monopoly, even though he had all the money, and his opponent had all the property, with hotels. ;-)
