Smoky Transformer Fire Closes 34th Street
POSTED: 10:04 am EDT July 26, 2004
UPDATED: 10:13 am EDT July 26, 2004
NEW YORK -- A transformer has caught on fire on 34th Street and traffic on that street has been halted between 7th and 8th Avenues.
The fire is creating a heavy smoke condition and firefighters are on the scene.
The fire is just a few blocks form Madison Square Garden, the site of next month's Republican National Convention.
There is no word on the cause of the fire.
Glad I missed that mess. Are you in the city today?
No, not today. Friday is my next scheduled trip, although I'm going to try to change my meeting from "face-to-face" conference.

A construction worker reported at 9:06 a.m. in the 400 block of S. Elizabeth that three manhole grates, valued at $1,050, and three beehive covers, valued at $1,050, were stolen. He said he had seen similar objects in the back of a pickup truck in the area and had obtained the license number.

RIGHT U R!
good morning TM'rs
Good morning to you Knak.
Thank you for this BC!
not much going on today........yet
Reminder, FR will also go down tonight 2 AMEST for one hour
You oreolady, have made the best point of all! Plus many of us have been at FR so long. We know we have a lot of lurkers here that do not post, I think about that all the time. And I have seen so many sites not do as well once they went independent. The only consensus is the worry of losing all our info per thread. We are not afraid of the interlopers, trolls etc. yes they are a challenge, but I think each one makes us tougher, but we also have lost some good folks who have not become inure to it all. I've been told repeatedly to hang in there and I would hope all TM'rs would. Thanks for your post!
Have you see anything today on this or did that make it another non-story
My husband is from Chicago, he thought that one of the dots was Peoria.
All US cities remain intact.
Now, I don't doubt AQ has the capability. I just don't think THIS particular varmint is a legit "messenger" of the true AQ.
I agree with you that this is a lot of hot air, however, I think we all need to take away from this one very critical fact:
The terrorist "street" wants very much to use nuclear weaponry against the United States. The capability may not match the sentiment TODAY, but at some point, it is highly likely it will. So although EOM's post are 99.99% bunk, the most salient point here is that the level of hatred and desire to inflict mass casualties on the U.S. is very real. If they do not have nuclear weapons, it is very much their goal, and they are probably working very hard to seal the deal. The 9-11 commission was correct in pointing out that this is a race against time. Al Qaeda is racing to get 'em, we're racing to close as many windows of opportunities as possible.
The last thing we should do is become jaded by all the empty threats. In many ways, this is exactly the purpose of deluging Americans with unrealized prophecies of destruction. At some point, we stop listening. We become lax. We become vulnerable to the very thing we fear the most because the enemy has convinced us they are not serious.
But they are. They are very serious, and the United States needs to do all she (we) can to keep the heat on. The genie is truly out of the bottle, and unless we can empty the swamps in Iran, Saudi Arabia, Syria, the Sudan, Nigeria, Kenya, Zaire, Somalia, and Yemen (to name a few), we stand a very realistic chance of some group of ne'er-do-wells slipping through the nets and in the very least attempting (if not succeeding) to do grave harm to our country.
I just think staying here is a good choice, but having the ability to ban individual users or banish them to only post in a "Time Out Bench" area.
Does our current thread program not allow that? I am not sure I understand how this TM off of Freepers works. Is it something that we can move to a new platform program at this same site? Or are there too many other things dependent on this threadding system?
I'm guessing the other one is Springfield.
So it was in the hardzone? Also I saw they have snipers on so many roofs..what roof exactly did they land on Wife?
