Bobby Fischer was theorized to have Asperger's syndrome, a form of autism.

That's a nasty illness.

Sure can be. For example, Ted Kaczynski, the Unabomber.

The humor on this thread so far is stale, mate.

unfortunately, I came back too late. At least he wasn't knighted.

Dumb question of the day:

Why was it illegal for Fischer to play that chess match in Yugoslavia back in 1992, but not illegal for Spassky to play him?

I doubt that Hollywood will make one of their fawning movies about him, though.

"Searching for Bobby Fischer" was the closest we'll ever get to this, though the movie had absolutely nothing to do with Bobby Fischer.

The Japanese did us no favors by arresting him. This is not the kind of case that the US gov't can come out of looking good. It would have been better if the Japanese had just left him alone to wander the world as the tragic madman he is.

OMG, the US govt has nothing better to do than track down and punish Bobby Fischer for doing nothing more than practice his profession. I guess it is true. We all do belong to the US govt.

How is Bobby Fischer supposed to make a living if the govt won't let him go to chess matches? Did the govt offer to compensate him if he agreed not to attend? If not why should they expect BF to pay for their idiotic foreign policies?

Spassky wasn't an American; US laws prohibitting travel to embargoed nations don't apply to foreigners. That's why Canadians can legally visit Cuba but US citizens can't.

Visiting Cuba or North Korea (then or now), or Yugoslavia (then) without permission of the Government violates the same law-- the Trading with the Enemy Act.

Marc Rich violated that act, among other things, and he got pardoned by Clinton for it! Too bad for Bobby Fischer that he didn't have a Denise Rich in his life to funnel library donations to Clinton.

For some reason I thought Spassky became a U.S. citizen after he defected from the Soviet Union back in the 1970s. I guess not.

Either way, this kind of sh!t is idiotic.

Fischer dared to contradict Clinton's most important foreign policy initiative - supporting the Bosnian Muslims and for that he must be hammered down by the state.

I vote we put him in the same cell with Martha and let the two of them plot to take over the world.

Might I mention 'A Beautiful Mind'? Robert Fischer is insane, but he was likely one of the greatest Chess Players (equal to Paul Morphy in that) to enter the arena.
