So, please write out the whole name and party for us in other states. For example, when I write about my Senators: Senator John Warner (R-VA) and Senator George Allen (R-VA), or Congressman, Representative Virgil Goode (R-VA 5th dist.), I write them out for those in other states not familiar with Virginia. I don't know how to do this, as my congressman is Chris Shays, who supposedly is an "R" but I don't know why.

I don't know how to do this, as my congressman is Chris Shays, who supposedly is an "R" but I don't know why. Well then, you might then do what I have always done when referring to Congress[persons] like Senator Olympia Snowe or Senator Susan Collins or Senator Lincoln Chaffee et.al., you can write: Senator John Warner (RINO-VA) [Republican In Name Only] or Senator Arlen Specter (LIRD-PA) [Liberal In Republican Disguise].
Perhaps, that helps?
