Will Doom 3 revive the struggling PC Gaming Industry?

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - Since 2000, developer id Software has told the world the next installment of "Doom," the game that kicked off the action genre, would ship "when it's done."

Good news, gamers: It's done. In the lexicon of the industry, "Doom 3" has gone gold. That means with id Software's work done, publisher Activision is duplicating copies to ship to retail. What it all boils down to is you'll be able to pick up a copy at retail on Aug. 5, though some stores could start selling the game as early as Aug. 3.

You would need more memory, a better video card.

Both are not that much money. You could get an inexpensive ATI or Nvidia card that would be an upgrade. But the RAM would really be needed to play this game. That is, if the 2GHz CPU can handle it. This game is advanced so much so that even faster CPUs will choke when the action gets intense.

Morrowind really is as addictive as Xena describes. The game play is unscripted. There are tons of quests to follow, which gain you experience, cash and open doors but you don't have to follow them, you can just wander and explore if you want and there's lots and lots of exploring to do. The game is frustrating at first because your character moves so slowly but that changes as your character gets stronger. I probably spent a month of actual game time playing Morrowind and never got bored with it.

That's really cool. I messed around with DOS 6.22 QBASIC for awhile. Wrote another crappy game program, and then after hours and hours of code writing and debugging, I found out that it couldn't be compiled into a stand-alone app. I got disgusted with programming at that point and went into networking instead, lol!

I'll definitely give Morrowind and Dungeon Siege a try. I have to stop playing Diablo II long enough to actually load the CDs, though...LOL!

I tried setting up a Counter Strike FR clan awhile back. Nothing ever came together. I am currently in a clan that will be in CAL next season, but I would be happy to play in a FR clan as well..

Dungeon Siege is another very excellent one. IIRC, that's the game that shook Bacon out of his first-person-shooter elitism and tossed him back into RPGs!

Gotta admit, Dungeon Siege was a good one. The freedom of camera control was what principally appealed to me. I've never liked the fixed overhead view of RPGs. Got enough of that with Ultima 1-8.

I have a hard time being a thief or an assassin. Being a big strong fighter with a little magic up your sleeve is the way to go.

Hmph. Dunmer assassin with a nasty glass dagger and Daedric longbow. I'll stick to taking 'em out before they can get to me, thanks. :-)

I know exactly what you mean. I hate the fact that I have to stop playing a game for a few minutes in order to install a new one. :)

Diablo II is my favorite - it's "obsolete" by today's graphical standards, but the playability is such that I still play it all the time.

Hubby's favorite, as well. Both of those games (I & II) were worth every penny, and almost make up for some less worthwhile purchases (Myst, for example).

Ouch, I think I'll stay on your good side. Wouldn't it be awesome if Morrowind was available XBox Live?

I could get lost in Heroes of MM II for days. The Might and Magic series was great too. Too bad it seemd 3DO has gone out of business.

Perhaps FR needs a pc gaming group set up. It might be fun to play Doom, UT, CS, ect together.

I'm in for this. Doom, Quake, UT, Warcraft II or III, Halo, etc. I'm not ashamed to admit that, in addition to being an FR freak, I'm also a video game freak.
