In what is considered to be a hate crime, a Sikh limousine driver was beaten unconscious on a sidewalk in a New York suburb during the weekend by apparently drunken white youths.
At least one person has been arrested and police were on the lookout for two others. The incident occurred in the Richmond area of Queens which has a large immigrant population on Saturday night.
Rajinder Singh Khalsa, 54, suffered multiple cuts, bruises and a broken nose. Speaking from his hospital bed, he said he and his cousin Gurcharan Singh were confronted by the youths who ridiculed their turbans calling them "dirty curtains" and asked them to take them off.
Gurcharan Singh, who owns a restaurant called Tandoori Express, said they had left the car on the street and were walking towards the restaurant where they intended to have tea. But as they were passing by an Italian catering hall, the men, who appeared to be drunk, started using abusive language.
"I told them that it is not a curtain but my turban and a religious symbol," Gurcharan Singh said.
"This isn't the first time that some dumb ass redneck has attacked a Sikh under the mistaken belief that the victim was a Muslim."
Why do you assume they thought he was a Muslim? Maybe they wanted to beat up a Sikh?
Ahhhh, that explains why my daughter's pediatrician wears a silver bracelet...I never asked him cause I thought it was none of my business. Great doctor and a nice guy with a great family
It's even worse. There is no "Richmond" section in Queens. "Richmond Hill" is the proper name of the section, a name that dates to the 19th century.
This New York City journalist and his editors should know the names of well-established NYC areas. It's like calling Greenwich Village "Greenwich". (He calls it "Richmond Hills" later in the article which is just as erroneous.)
Fundamentalist Muslims certainly feel that way. How long have you been a member of the Taliban?
As we say in my tradition, Praise the Lord!
This is just a sikh story.
Who cares?
"In what is considered to be a hate crime"...Are we profiling here in the press? Is there such a thing as a "love crime"?
If they were Rednecks, first they would have offered him a can of Pabst Blue Ribbon, a bag of pork rinds and then kicked his butt. I believe when the smoke clears, it was some New York street trash out on the prowl with a northern attitude. Bush/Cheney 2004.
. . . in New York City.
Concepts you seem to be totally unaware of.
Good post!
