I don't know about the Tigers specifically, but the people of Tamil are mostly Hindu. I don't think there's much of a religious angle either way. They are secular nationalists.

They are also pretty innovative when it comes to finding new ways to kill innocents. Hamas and Hezbollah have copied some of their tactics.
