Profiteering seems to be in style too, by the same people that would outright lie during an interview. Then again, "Never attribute to malicious intent what could more easily be attributed to incompetence." It very well could be sheer stupidity rather than dishonesty.
I'm not sure that there's a qualitative difference between being led astray by dishonesty or incompetence.
