Milosevic forced to accept defence counsel

The Guardian

Slobodan Milosevic is fit to continue standing trial but may not be well enough to represent himself, the war crimes tribunal in The Hague ruled yesterday. The three judges made it clear that the former Serb president may be forced accept a defence counsel, because the burden of doing it himself was damaging his heath, and that the trial was not, contrary to speculation, about to collapse.

Mr Milosevic, 62, suffers from recurrent and chronic high blood pressure and heart problems.

Judge Patrick Robinson suspended the hearing on Monday, when Mr Milosevic was due to begin his defence, on being told that he was at risk of a heart attack or a stroke and urgently needed rest.

"It is in the interests of the accused and the broader interests of justice that this trial be conducted and concluded within a reasonable period of time," the judges wrote.

"There is no evidence that the accused is not fit to stand trial at all, but there is evidence that ... [his health] is such that he may not be fit to continue to represent himself, and that his continuing to represent himself could adversely affect the fair and expeditious conduct of the trial."

They ordered that the court registrar identify counsel to represent Mr Milosevic. His agreement is not required.

"It may be necessary to assign counsel to the accused, and/or adopt other measures to ensure a fair and expeditious conduct of the trial," they wrote.

"Said it better than I did."

In principle, I am not for or against who judges whom as long as the principles of justice are respected, meaning, evidence first. The judges at Nuremburg had a relatively easy job because the evidence was blatant (all those ashes, those dentures, wigs and hair, wagons of them...). The Hague prosecution has mostly secret and compromised witnesses and that is the travesty of justice.

I am not responsible for what happened before I went on vacation in the Balkans.

Exactly - only proves the slippery slope principle.

sorry hop...
no sale.
My mind was made up a LONG time ago.
I support the serbs against the muzzies...
period.
I don't actually give a flip about your opinion about me or my clue retaining ability.

To the extent that the catholics in YUGO allied with the muzzies, they are my enemies. Just as they allied themselves with the pallie causes in Israel...

bye.

As if anybody would ever accuse you of being responsible.

Nobody's accusing you of firing the SAM that downed Cpt O'Grady Destro.

But claiming to have gone for a meet and greet with the folks who did shoot him down, so soon after the fact, puts you in rather an interesting position.

Just so long as there are no pictures of you posing on some AAA, I guess it'll be alright.

Number of borders between the SAM site that downed Cpt O'Grady and your vacation spot: 0

Number of months between June 1995 and July 1995: 0

I was in the region the day of and saw with my own eyes what happened.

Your words, kid.

Lemme guess - the 90 odd miles between Banja Luka and Srebrenica qualify to put it in a different region, and the 5 weeks between the O'Grady rescue and your visit constitute a different time frame.

Here's a news flash for you - you were vacationing amongst enemy combatants.

Perhaps you saw with your own eyes who fired the SAM at our F-16s over Srebrenica on July 11th.

It took fifteen minutes for the Forward Air Controller to guide new NATO planes in. The Americans were to bomb the Serb artillery positions on the western edge of of the enclave that had shelled OP Mike and OP November. But the pilots also had difficulty finding the targets. As the U.S. planes prowled the area, a shoulder-fired antiaircraft missile streaked towards one of them. The missile missed by a wide margin, but the planes disappeared anyway.
Endgame, Rohde, P 162

One wonders if you would have commiserated with him on his miss and wished him better luck next time.

The Serbs were/are not my enemies and June is not July and 90 miles is a long drive and in any case what were American planes doing flying over another country's air space? A country that never fired a shot at an American other than in self defense. I plan to vacation in the Balkans again. Zero dollars wil be spent on the Muslim side.

Learn how to read Destro.

You claim to have been vacationing amongst those who were trying to kill our servicemen when they weren't busy murdering civilians and POWs.

Perhaps when you take your next vacation, you should consider taking up permanent residence where your loyalties lie.

I saw no murder. Serbs were trying to kill Americans? You mean Serbs invaded America when I was on vacation?

Oh, by the way - I saved an Albanian boy from drowning on my last vacation. The Albanian boy's father then proceded to beat the snot out of the child on the beach. Lovely.
