Awesome post, so far one of the posts of the week.
Yup!
You might be quite correct that bush is in fact campaigning like Truman in '48 and not being covered by the national media. I cannot descern that from Germany where I am confined to Armed Forces Radio (read NPR and Rush) and Cnn Intl. But I do not see anything on these FR threads which leads me to bellieve he is giving 'em hell.
Last night CNBC Europe carried a show by Tina Brown which was a travesty of journalism. The panalists which included junk psychologist and Gail Shehey undertook to psychoanalyze the president telling us he was a)on a dry drunk b) suffering from dyslexia c) unable to read properly c) unable to adequately use the English language d) uanable to assimilate facts especially e) facts which did not fit his preconceptions d) desperately trying to maintain equilibrium by excessive exercise and obsessive religiosity and f) getting worse. Christopher Hitchens, who did not look drunk, was permitted a few minutes in rebuttal.
If the program were just a dormitory bull session we would dismiss it as merely pathetic. But this presents the administration to my English speaking neighbors here in Bavaria. God knows what effect it is having in the homeland. The mere fact that an affiliate of a major network could indulge in such a travesty is revealing of how the media has declared open season on George Bush.
To counter this and to evade death by a thousand such cuts, I believe Bush must seize the agenda and set the headline every day. Clinton did it in '96. Bush is simply not doing it now.
Time is running out. Look at the polls here (http://www.realclearpolitics.com/polls.html) and they show a President underwater in the all important approval polls. It means that more than half the people have already passed judgment against Bush and it will be very difficult indeed to change them back especially with the media, not Bush, setting the agenda and beating him up every night like Tina Brown did last night.
Condi: "I could so kick yo' sorry white ass, pretty boy." So now it's Potsie Webber and Lurch. If I want to see either one of them, I'll watch TV land, thanks.
Does this mean with two senators on the campaign trail the republicans can get some of these judicial nominees through?
I'd take it a little further. The media has declared open season on America as we knew it.
Cheney will be VP.
But don't worry Bush will announce the new head of the CIA and that will refocus the media..
HH and DM were ok; but JFK should have never been President.
You might have had the courage to address your remarks also to the person whom you were insulting.
That's what happens when you run with something too soon based on a source pulling your leg.
Oops is right.
The democrats obviously didn't want Edwards the first time around so why would they want him now? Edwards and Kerry disagreed on so much before but I guess Edwards is willing to trade it all in to be guy #2.
I am old enough to have seen with my own eyes what they did to Goldwater in '64.
I went to a rally in west Orange NJ and observed supporters cheering as we entered. Later, on the 11 o'clock news they were misrepresented by the film to be protestors. I never forgot that.
I would agree the assault is on America as we knew it probably because those values are personified in Bush.
Hey!!! Wait ONE MOMENT HERE!!!
From RUSH---
Why wasn't a BLACK MAN selected as VP candidate???
How many BLACK or HISPANIC, for that matter, candidates did John Effin' Kerry INTERVIEW???? Why not DONOVAN McNabb??....Because NEITHER of them could carry Philadelphia..
End of RUSH THOUGHT--
Heck---the NFL REQUIRES that BLACK candidates for a coaching replacement be MINORITY!!!
Come on DemoKrats...WALK THE TALK!!!
GRRRRRRRRRRollin' in the Aisles at the John-John candidacy...
I think the Kerry campaign likely set out to specifically embarrass the NY Post. They are going to get some payback.
He picked him so he could further mimick the Kennedy thing.
JFK, now John John.
All that doom-and-gloom having been said, I do realize that as bad domestically the Pubbies have been, a RAT-infested Oval Office and a RAT-run Congress, even as a "lesson" to the GOP, would be infinitely worse. It remains to be seen how many others see that. That's the trouble jumping in mid-stream; things like that get lost.
That part having been straightened out, the "chase for the middling", when conducted with a blatant disregard for the base, is indeed a loser's game. There simply isn't enough votes in the "vast middle" to piss all over the conservatives that, like it or not, gave the Pubbies the last 3 significant close victories (1980, 1994, 2000).
I realize that President Bush is trying to walk a fine line. While he's not the "ideal conservative" (IMHO, nobody is); he has mostly conservative leanings, which is more than good enough for me. He is also getting undercut by the growing fossilized class of Pubbies, at both the federal and state levels, who think they're RATs (see the latest example from yesterday's OpinionJournal article on the House's - that's right, the House of Representatives - wholesale abandonment of any spending controls).
Heck, you want an example from the land of cheese and taxes? The senate Pubbies, a mere few months after passing and having line-item vetoed (veto upheld by a single vote, with 3 of the 4 required RATs joining the entire senate Pubbie majority in attempting to override) by the RAT governor a property tax freeze, promised that a state constitutional amendment that would freeze property taxes would NOT come up for first consideration this year (and thus not in this biannual session of the Legislature). The claim that it would be a nice campaign issue is blown out of the water by the fact that, since amendments have to be passed by consecutive biannual sessions of the Legislature before going to the voters, it won't be on the ballot either before or when that RAT governor is up for reelection in 2006.
The John/John ticket...
