France could defend EU in case of attack: minister

05 July 2004

France could use its nuclear capability to defend its neighbours, French Defence Minister Michele Alliot-Marie said in an interview Monday, while also urging European Union states to increase military spending.

She said that rogue states "could one day point their missiles toward France and its neighbours. We could say to those countries: 'Watch out, if you try to carry out your threats we will destroy you before you know what's hit you.'"

"If Germany asked us for help, it is probable that European solidarity would come into play," she told the Berliner Zeitung newspaper, and added: "For us, nuclear weapons are the ultimate protection against a threat from abroad."

She said ethnic conflict and terrorism were making the world increasingly more unstable and called on EU members to increase their military budgets to two percent of gross domestic product -- NATO's minimum recommended level.

"Today in Europe there are only three countries who spend more than 2.0 percent of GDP on defence. They are France, Britain and Greece. The others are not doing enough," Alliot-Marie said.

She said that France has a mobile, flexible and highly-motivated military and that it was the second or third best in the world.

Has she cleared this with Chirac?

The world just keeps getting more ironic by the day.

Do you find it interesting that they are willing to wait until they need nukes?

France? France cannot take care of its own population.

Item 1 - Widespread Mad Cow Disease in all French meat for decades

Item 2 - Widespread (~50,000) deaths from sunlight last year.

Item 3 - Government-accepted slaughters of Jews and burning of synagogues and churches.

France? Forgetaboutit. Poland and England are the new Europe.

This article was posted over at LGF. The posters to it there seem to be reaching a consensus : the "rogue states" France is threatening aren't Third World/Islamic terrorist states ; rather, this is meant as a warning to the US and Israel. At the very least, it's an attempt to make EU states rethink their reliance on the US's military, in favor of France. What do freepers think? To whom is France giving this warning, and what is France's motive?

(I am getting very tired of France and the antics of its politicos.)

Remember Clinton saying if Israel was attacked he’d grab a rifle and jump in a fox hole? Same thing here, tough talk meaning nothing.

Sabre rattling with a butter knife. I did some training with the french back in the 80's. I'm not making fun of them at all when I say that nukes are their only hope.

Is Chirac worried about being seated next to saddam?

Perhaps one dirty deal too many?

Perhaps French Intelligence services have more anti-american activity than just stealing tech from US companies for French Corporations.

France is reminding the world they have nukes. Does France have a reason to fear US Military invasion?

What every did happen to the Vichey? (Is Chirac related?)

They don't have to do that, they will just stick their hands out and sell everyone out they can and then vote against anyone helping them.

Exactly right. This is a threat to us. The french are now poodles belonging to the chicoms. The chicoms have been making deals (and trouble for us) all over the globe.

I beleive this "announcement" can be equated to a fictional Frog on top of his castle yelling "I fahhht in your general direction!"
