You gotta wonder if this has something to do with those mysterious divers from several months back; perhaps they planted something in the waters.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - A man accused of lying to federal authorities about shipments of communications equipment to Pakistan pleaded not guilty Friday in U.S. District Court.
Mohamad Elzahabi, a Minneapolis resident of Lebanese origin, didn't speak during his brief court appearance other than to acknowledge the charges and enter his pleas.
An indictment unsealed Thursday charges Elzahabi with two counts of false statements. He's accused of knowing about shipments of walkie-talkies and other equipment from a business he ran in New York, but lying about it to terrorism investigators. The equipment was recovered in Afghanistan by U.S. military authorities, according to a criminal complaint filed ahead of the indictment.
Elzahabi also told investigators he attended an al-Qaida training camp.
Prosecutors also charge Elzahabi, 41, with lying about helping a man get a Massachusetts driver's license under false pretenses. That man, Raed Mohammed Hijazi, was later convicted in Jordan in a failed bombing plot that targeted American and Israeli tourists, the complaint said.
