I think the deserter status is moot point, as he had a Marine ID card...that is enough for the Marines, they will not let their name be defiled by the terrorists.

I still do not think he was deserter, that status would have been placed on him when he could not be found, and if he had said any such nonsense about wanting to go home it could have been misconstrued when he turned up missing. We will have to wait and see the outcome of his status.

I believe we have more to find out about this case.
