'German police foil attempted hijack' 11.17PM, Tue Jun 29 2004
German special forces are reported to have stormed a plane in Munich after three men attempted to hijack an Istanbul-bound flight.
The pilot was reportedly able to return the plane, which was carrying 150 passengers, to Munich airport.
A German television station said the pilot hit an alarm button after the plane, run by the company Free Bird, had been in the air for ten minutes.
It said none of the passengers were hurt when special forces overpowered the three kidnappers.
One of the would-be hijackers is said to have jumped from the plane onto the tarmac.
Heh heh, sounds like the first chapter of Clancy's novel, "Rainbow Six", where a couple of yahoos try to take over a flight that happens to have most of the world's foremost antiterror operators on board, in civilian clothes.
How do you say "D'OH!" in Arabic?
I know its early days, but I have a feeling thats what it might be. The story broke about an hour ago btw.
Damn those Lutheran terrorists! Why can't they be peaceful like teh Wahabbists?
If it was GSG-9 that took down the plane, they are not very PC.
Damn Sweedes
Man arrested after plane bomb scare
From correspondents in Munich
June 30, 2004
A TURKISH airliner has made an emergency landing in Munich after a passenger made a bomb threat, police said.
The Freebird Airlines Airbus with 150 passengers and seven crew on board had just started its flight from Munich to Istanbul when it reported "security problems," police spokesman Armin Ganserer said.
It returned to Munich airport, where a man was removed and arrested, he said.
"Apparently it was a bomb threat," Mr Ganserer said.
Mr Ganserer did not have any details about the man's nationality or age, and motives were unclear.
No injuries were reported

Hijack threat: Security beefed up in Karipur airport
Kozhikode, June 29 (UNI) Security has been tightened in and around the Karipur airport here following reports of a possible hijack of a gulf-bound flight by a Muslim fundamentalist outfit.
Airport Director M Subha Rao told UNI that ''special security'' had been sounded in and around the airport on an intelligence report that the terrorist outfit Al-Qaeda might hijack an international flight originating from the airport.
As a precautionary measure, he said the airport authorities, after a meeting with the Indian Airlines and Air India officials on Saturday, decided to beef up security arrangements on the international flights and in the airport premises by deploying the Central Industrial Security Force personnel apart from the airport's own security network.
The authorities have also ordered foolproof screening on non-Malayalees and foreigners arriving at the airport, he said.
The public sector Air India and Indian Airlines are operating flights to various destinations in the West Asia from Karipur airport, used by a majority of the Gulf bound passengers in the country.
Not likely ... the hijack attempt was too early in the flight to Istanbul. Maybe a target closer ... but a 3 hour flight to Istanbul would have been easily intercepted long before arriving over a target in that area.
No BS here, they're looking for Muslims.
Several airport in the US have been told to beef up their security .....be on the lookout for terrorists.....
Was it headed for the U.S.?
"If I leave here tomorrow, will you still remember me.."
Oh great....
Scheduled to land in Munich on Saturday.
Freebird? I wonder if everytime before they take off the pilot yells "turn it up".
