I'm as much in favor of preserving our rights as anyone, but it seems to me that providing a policeman with our names upon request is very reasonable. This decision doesn't seem to require us to carry ID or submit to searches or to do anything other than to tell an officer our names if he asks. In other words it is trivial.

If you want examples of police power that do violate our rights consider asset forfeiture, no knock warrants and electronic surveillance of cyberspace and telecommunications, (ala carnivore). Now that's scary stuff. Having to tell a cop your name is not.

What could be wrong about a policeman demanding that you identify your religion? After all, what have you got to hide?
