I sure thought it felt like an explosion. Of course, we were sound asleep when it hit.

Yes, more like a strong explosion. My wife knew what it was while it was happening. Were used of some rumbling, we live near a quarry and it felt like they had just set off the mother-of-all-blasts.

I was also wondering if it was the Illinois Republican party crashing to earth.

Ah just typical of certain types of quakes...first you hear the train and then it hits the house...smack...then you pick up the dishes, pet the animals that are going nuts, and go back to bed...lol
