Who's fault is that? I was not jobless but I got a second job because I need extra money. This second job isn't giving me enough hours so I'm taking up maid service. And what? If you are unemployed get up off yer lazy arse and go do something.

I have a relative who is a draftsman out of a job. The problem is that computers now easily do their job. A lot of people are refusing to be retrained especially if they are 40+. This has nothing to do with the job market or who is President. They are obsolete and won't admit it.

Good for Ms Neff mentioned in the article.

Both my daughters lost very good jobs during the dot-som bust. They collected unemployment, researched, networked, and learned new skills(while working part time) and now have new careers. They were out of full time work for about 6 months.

There was no whining, just hard work. One of them even tossed her credit cards and reapplied when she got work. She did without and managed just fine and this was after earning very good money.

They made me proud.

I am trying to make a non-profit educational foundation (cyber-library) from a historical web resource that I started six years ago which is very highly regarded in academics. The IT industry is not going to give much consideration to a fiftysomething with a degree in Mathematics who has 20 years of experience when they're looking for 1-2 years of experience and no college.

I'm biting the bullet right now and living off my savings which are dwindling. Yes I would happily take a lower paying job but everyone says that I am "over qualified." It makes me angry that there are always some people on these threads who have nothing helpful to suggest except to say "get a job, any job you lazy jerk."

Yes, I get very discouraged at times, but G-D never closes a door without opening another.

The guy in the article has 35 years experience. I have been an institutional equities trader for 33 years. It's called "GETTING OLDER". Things change. We'll have to take a back seat ... get used to it.

It's a buyer's market. Employers want the cheapest labor they can get their hands on. Benefits are long gone for the most part.

Many people are working in the "gray area". What does the government expect? You need a roof over your head, and enough Top Ramen to survive the week...

He's now taken early Social Security...

Can someone tell me how this is accomplished, unless the person is so handicapped he can't work, and files for SS and goes thru the years-long battle to qualify??

I wonder if these people realize how lucky they are to live in a country where if they don't want to work they can still survive.

That would certainly be the case in Pennsylvania, agrees the state's governor, Edward Rendell (D). The official unemployment rate is 5.4 percent, but it's "much greater," Mr. Rendell says, when factoring in men who have been cut off welfare and never got back into the workforce "and as a result never show up in the unemployment rolls."

Yeah, I trip over they and their families emaciated corpses on a regular basis.

I got laid off from a telecom in 2004. I did some soul-searching, and am now taking classes to get teacher certification. Living off savings for now, but basically re-inventing myself. No guarantees, but it's worth a shot.

"Gee, I don't know why people throw their arms up and say 'I give up!' " she writes in an e-mail.

"Sorry, I'm not doing it, but I get doors slammed all the time," says Ms. Neff, who has four months left to finish her courses before she starts another training program to become a registered nurse.

Maybe because she is new to the unemployment thing.

I havehad 3 jobs this year alone.

I had to recount my jobs numbers, I was wrong to say it was about 15, I recounted, and it is:

Laid off 2001 in June
1 1 week temp job in July
1 4 week 1099 job in August
1 4 week job in Oct
1 8 day job in Dec
1 9 month job from Feb 2002 to Oct 2002
1 5 week job from Nov to Dec 2002
1 10 week or so part time job from Dec to Mar2003
2 temp job through the same agency from Jan to March 14, 2003
1 7 month job from Sep 2003 to April 2004
1 5 week job from April to May 2004
just started a job 2 full weeks ago, supposed to last until Oct, maybe until December at the longest, Company is Moving out of Connecticut to California.

That is 11 jobs since June 2001. 3 of them this year alone.

As a female child growing up in the 50's, I looked forward to two career options: nursing or teaching. When I actually reached college age, the feminists denigrated those two careers as "traditional women's career ghettos". Now in 2004, it's funny to see so many women retraining to be nurses and teachers!

Most here at FR do not waste their time at DU.

I like to check in there and see what the enemy has to say about daily events.

I dont have the thread that this loser posted on, but I will tell you what he wrote.

This loser claimed he had been out of work for four, yes four, years.

I saw this and wanted to register on DU just to tell him to move where the jobs are and call him a loser. But, they did not allow a Yahoo e-mail address. So I gave up.

"Hiring up, but many jobless not looking" this guy is driving those numbers.

LOSER!

Jeffrey Schwab has given up trying to find another job as a draftsman [with] 35 years of pipeline-design experience.

Jeffrey is like me - skilled in designing and building power plants, refineries, and factories - none of which we design and build in America any more. The last American nuclear plant was completed in 1986, and the last American oil refinery was completed in the late 70s. We don't build factories here any more, either.

I remember when my Contract Engineering Weekly was full of page after page of ads for "pipers" (piping designers). Ahhh...I long for those days.

On a happier note, drafting is what saved me. Not being able to find any work in the industrial world, I am using my home computer and AutoCAD to design houses for local architects.

Why work when you can lay home and draw unemployment.

Many don't look until their unemployment benefits runout. Which means that they are collecting those benefits illegally, however entitled they think they are.
