Dog days (Schwarzenegger drops puppy killing budget-saving plan)

Dog days

Alerted by his daughter to a growing controversy over the handling of lost pets, Gov. Schwarzenegger announced this afternoon that he has withdrawn a proposal that would have allowed shelters to put lost animals to death sooner. In a move to give cities and counties more flexibility to handle their own budgets and save money, Schwarzenegger had proposed repealing a state mandate that requires shelters to hold animals for six days before putting them to death. But animal rights activists protested the move, and now Schwarzenegger has relented.

“I realized last night there was a mistake I made,” Schwarzenegger told reporters in a hallway outside his office. “Animals will be kept in animal shelters for six days. Everything will be kept exactly the same.”

Some people take their own dogs...dogs which they have had for 2+ years to the pound because they decide they don't like them any more. My dog (Nikki) was rescued from the Oakland City Pound by a woman who had previously placed her with TWO families. She was going to be put to death and would have been except just by chance a friend of this woman saw Nikki in the pound and told her. Nikki is the greatest dog that ever was (all the dogs I've had are just that...the greatest dogs that ever were) and she was going to be murdered simply because she didn't like going to the stupid, stupid, stupid "dog park" down there in the stupid, stupid, stupid (and fascist) Bay Area (where I no longer live...thank goodness...now Nikki runs free on the beach) so she was labeled as being "aggressive" and was not even going to be given a chance to be adopted. She was going to be murdered. Fortunately, fate intervened and she is alive and well and just being a natural dog in a natural and beautiful place.

Didn't take him long to cave in to the animal rights crowd.

I am not surprised.

So... I guess there should be no AMBER ALERTS for lost children?? My pets are loved as part of my family as are my children. And God willing...I had more than just 3 days to find them."Heaven goes by grace. If it went by merit, you would stay out and your dog would go in."

I'm not an "animal rights" person.

But there is no good reason to push for this change, unless you're a green-eye-shader, whose only concern is money.

Scrooge.

It's perfectly acceptable to kill human fetuses by the millions, but kill one puppy and the public is outraged. What a perverse culture we live in.

I am not a Scrooge.

I bet I have volunteered more hours, and more money towards finding shelter animals good homes this year than all of you have.

I have a few family members who work with animal rescue and one daughter has a full time job at the animal shelter as a public relations person. Her whole job is finding homes for pets, and BEGGING people who say they care to volunteer some of their time.

There are too many animals and not enough homes.

Not enough volunteers.

I bet it costs alot of $$$ that California does not have.

Money that I think could be used more wisely by the taxpayer.

Yes all things have a soul even the trees of the field have a soul toward their Maker. God made all of the birds, the cats and the dogs and yes I believe they have a soul.

Animals are able to understand commands and love. They often crave love. They would not understand love if they had no soul.

I believe we shall have pets in Heaven including those we fear here. We shall have nothing to fear there. Not all animals are edible and therefore have another purpose.

GOD is a loving God and He would not give us something to love if we cannot have them in Eternity. Before King David was a king he was a shepherd of sheep. The lowly shepherd became king. The king Jesus became a lowly shepherd, and He became a lamb. The whole world has the grace to be saved because the King became a Lamb.

Save it.

Have you ever lost your dogs or cats for more than 3 days? NO.. Why, because you take care of them, that's why.

I apologize for not wanting to subsidize irresponsible pet owners.

Sorry for being so "insensitive".

$14 million, a nit in California's budget.

No matter, Arnold got religion on the matter.

OK, ambrose, I propose a tax on all animal owners. $100 per pet per year to pay for your vaunted animal-rights services. Are you willing to put your money where your mouth is?

$14 million in local funds is quite different than the state $14 million.

Why don't you donate an extra chunk of your paycheck for the cause since you care so much for irresponsible pet owners.

LOL.. ass-kicked? You haven't made a single valid point yet.. Just a bunch of bullcrap and nonsense about how the poor puppies should be responsibility of the state to take care of.

How pathetic.

Put it to a vote.

You'll lose.
