Dog days
Alerted by his daughter to a growing controversy over the handling of lost pets, Gov. Schwarzenegger announced this afternoon that he has withdrawn a proposal that would have allowed shelters to put lost animals to death sooner. In a move to give cities and counties more flexibility to handle their own budgets and save money, Schwarzenegger had proposed repealing a state mandate that requires shelters to hold animals for six days before putting them to death. But animal rights activists protested the move, and now Schwarzenegger has relented.
I realized last night there was a mistake I made, Schwarzenegger told reporters in a hallway outside his office. Animals will be kept in animal shelters for six days. Everything will be kept exactly the same.

Great! He came to his senses! Amen....
Love your pets, because they love you unconditionally!
I guess it didn't occur to you that a collar can come off or be removed.
If it's a family pet that is lost, then that family should have a collar on the pet with contact information.
It's the responsibility of a pet owner.
These are animals, not human beings. It's common sense to me that if you take on the responsibility to take care of one of these pets, that you shoudl have enough common sense to know that it "might" get lost, and that if it does get lost, a person can read a phone number off the collar and contact the owners.
Good rack the Terminator
This is probably pencil pushing Bureaucrat suggest this
NOT ARNOLDDD
I have a dog and two cats myself.. The collars I have for them have never fallen off..
And who in the hell would remove them?
They are removed for grooming. If they get loose, a malicious person could remove them.
Anyway, great... you should run for office on a platform of killing puppies... see how far it gets you...
A malicious person is going to remove the collar and then just let the cat run off?
Oh come on, please. Would you listen to yourself?
Now you're calling me a puppy killer, because I don't want my taxpayer dollars to subsidize people being irresponsible with their pets.
Why stop their.. Why don't you call me a human killer, because I don't support Universal Health Care.
What a fool. It was a bad idea to start with from a PR standpoint, but now the animal whackos know that really loud tantrum throwing will result in them getting their way.
This is the second time he's caved like this. It's going to get awfully noisy around the capitol over the next few years.
I'm sorry.. What was I thinking.. Let's take tens of millions of dollars and make sure kittens and puppies live a few weeks to make sure their owners have enough time to "get around" and pick up the phone when they actually decide to give a crap about their pets.
"Fluffy's been missing for 2 days, he's usually spends half his day in the house"
"Well, I don't feel like picking up the phone and seeing if anyone turned him into the SPCA.. Oh, we'll give him a few more days, I'm sure he'll show up."
So if Fluffy is killed after six days instead of three days, that will make it easier to explain to a six year-old girl?
I'm allergic. According to many and various Peanut Precedents, any stray cat or dog should be instantly killed.
You're doing a great job on this one Josh. I'll just cheer you on from the sidelines after a hard day in that building myself today.
The article says "lost animals". I didn't see any reference to puppy killing.
Our kitty is a veritable Houdini when it comes to slipping out of collars. We've had a number we've tried, adjusted anywhere from as loose as recommended to just short of what would hinder breathing and he shucks them within 2 hours.
There are a lot of wonderful "random mutts" out ther just waiting to be adopted.
If the state takes it upon itself to capture and imprison animals that belong to someone else, there should be a reasonable period in which the owner can be reunited with his/her pet.
This somehow reminds me of the Schroedinger's Cat paradox of quantum physics. You don't know which cat is alive until you look in the box.. or shelter.
You don't live in California. What the hell difference does it make to you?
What is your idea of a reasonable period?
I think 3 days is a fine amount of time. Anyone who takes more than 3 days to finally realize there pet is gone or finally finds the time to get around and make an effort to find the pet, doesn't deserve to have that responsibility.
Not in California. Give it up. You lost.
