"I don't want to die. My life is important." I'm pretty sure I could at least spare myself from making a similar statement; but I'd sure rather die in an escape attempt, no matter how futile, than to lie in wait for the worst - while letting my mind become consumed with the fear that destroyed this man's courage.

Of coarse, it's not always possible to make any attemt at escape. But people do often pass-up at least one (desperate) opportunity. You should always be waiting for that slim chance and be ready to go for it.
