7 troops injured as mily vehicle blown up in Wana

Monday July 12, 2004 (0720 PST)

WANA, July 12 (Online): At least seven Army troops were critically wounded when the suspected militants Monday blew up a military vehicle by a remote-controlled bomb in Azam Warsak, 15 kilometers from Wana-the district headquarters of Southern Waziristan. The incident took place around 8:00 am on Monday when a military convoy was passing through the area. The vehicle was completely damaged in the blast. An eyewitness Shahid Faridullah talking to Online feared that there might be some causalities in the attack. However, no official information was available to verify the statement. The Pakistan Army helicopters immediately reached incident's site and escorted the injured troops to the hospital for medical treatment. Also, the Ahmadzai Wazir tribe put off till today (Tuesday) the tribal jirga called to decide the handing over of Maulvi Abbas and Muhammad Javed, the two tribesmen wanted by the local administration for sheltering foreign militants in the area. On the other hand, the fighting between suspected militants and security forces Monday entered second consecutive day in Shakai area.

The two sides heavily bombarded Fauji Colony, Zeri Noor Wana and Tiyar Zada Qila areas. A bombshell landed on the house of a local, Brig (Retd) Qayum Sher Masood, with minor damages to the house. The tribals of Southern Waziristan stressed upon the government to immediately halt the military operation in Wana and try to resolve the aliens' registration dispute through peaceful means.

Hundreds of families have left the area for safe places and shopping centres are closed down, amid fears of severe fighting in the coming days.
