Not the wisest move on Irans part. They have a population on the verge of outright rebellion, many of those are pro American.

The Mullahs need a diversion fast.

They're probably expecting a few bombs to do away with their nuke program. So this could be a pathetic attempt at sabre rattling. Which is apt as they might as well arm themselves with sabres, as they're gona get an a**whipping anyway.

"The Mullahs need a diversion fast."

I think you nailed it.

Wondering now if a little dust up ('thousands dead in unprovoked B-52/ B-1/ cruise missle strike') would haul the islamic wasteland into line behind Iran, or give their now constrained dissenters a boost for open civil war?

You are wrong--Its a brilliant move. The Iranians will be focused on "the Great Satan" and a possible war and not looking at what the mullas are doing. This will silence any pro-USA people in Iran. Just as long as no one starts shooting... Iran would love to snatch the southern half of Iraq. If there was a rebellion in the south and if Kerry is elected and if all the US troops go home--Maybe they might pull it off. That's a lot of "ifs". Good reason for the US to stay.
