MIRAMAR, Fla. - Gulshair El Shukrijumah, an internationally-known Islamic scholar whose son is accused by the FBI of being a terrorist, has died. He was 74.
El Shukrijumah had suffered a series of strokes since his oldest son, Adnan G. El Shukrijumah, 28, was named by the FBI as a serious threat to the United States' interests at home and abroad.
Last month, Attorney General John Ashcroft named the son again as he warned of an increased risk of terrorist attacks during the summer. The family said they tried to keep this news from the father, but a family friend said he saw his son's picture on TV.
"When he saw his son he started to cry and he kept crying. ... After that he had the stroke," said Sofian Abdelaziz, executive director of the Miami-based American Muslim Association of North America.
El Shukrijumah entered a coma and never recovered. He died Friday.
"They feel that he'd been through a lot the last year, and I think they are comfortable now to see he is at rest," Abdelaziz said.
A native of Guyana, El Shukrijumah retired to Florida after 10 years leading a Brooklyn mosque that was attended by at least one suspect from the first World Trade Center bombing in 1993.
He testified in the trial of Clement Hampton-El, who was convicted of plotting to blow up the United Nations and other New York landmarks in the 1990s.
In South Florida, El Shukrijumah was asked to become the spiritual leader for a nearby mosque, Masjid Al-Hizrah. He was fired after his son was named as a terror suspect.
Adnan El Shukrijumah was originally intended to be Jose Padilla's partner in a terrorist attack, said Deputy Attorney General James Comey. El Shukrijumah lived in South Florida at the same time as Padilla, an American held as an "enemy combatant" for allegedly planning to detonate a "dirty bomb" that would have spewed radiological material into the air.
The partnership broke up because Padilla and El Shukrijumah didn't get along, Comey said.
