Majority of G-8 leaders will not attend Reagan's funeral

SAVANNAH, June 9 (Itar-Tass) -- The majority of the Group of Eight leaders are not going to attend the funeral of ex-president Ronald Reagan, according to an informal survey Itar-Tass made in the lobbies of the Group of Eight summit on the Sea Island.

German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder and Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi are the two G- 8 leaders for the time being who said they would definitely attend a mourning ceremony for Ronald Reagan in Washington.

British Prime Minister Tony Blair, the closest European partner of U.S. President George Bush, is expected to go to Washington too, said well-informed British journalists.

Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin has declared already that he will not attend the funeral of Ronald Reagan. Instead, Canadian Governor- General Adrienne Clarkson will represent Canada at the mourning ceremony in Washington.

French diplomats told Itar-Tass that President Jacques Chirac would return to France after the summit. The Japanese government declared that Yasuhiro Nakasone, a predecessor of Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi, would represent Japan at the funeral.

President Vladimir Putin is unlikely to take part in the mourning ceremonies connected with the funeral of Ronald Reagan. The funeral of the ex- U.S. president was scheduled for Friday night Moscow time, while on Saturday, Russia is celebrating its state national holiday. The Russian president should be in his own country on the occasion of the nationwide state holiday in Russia.

Note that the G-8 leaders are already right here in Georgia for the G-8 Summit, and some of them can't take another day to stay and go to Reagan's funeral.

Blair and Berlusconi will attend. Even Schroder has the decency to attend.

Chirac and the Canadian PM will not attend -- the weasels.

I can kind of understand Putin not attending -- since the term "evil empire" keeps coming up and he may be uncomfortable.

I am somewhat surprised that Koisumi, Japan's PM, won't attend, though he has demonstrated that he and his country are our friends.

Well, as a Republic, we have to leave it up to GW Bush to visit retribution upon assholes who live to hold us in disdain.

I trust Bush to do his duty.

O'Reilly is calling for continuing boycott of French goods.

We can all do our small part.

O'Reilly pointed out in his memo, that Chirac wanted to stop the current UN resolution from passing also.

He is out to obstruct us every way he can.

I can understand Putin not going, it would be like GW being gone on the 4th of July. Gorbechev is going to represent Russia. france and Canada is inexcuseable. Canada is really starting to piss me off.

Chiraq and Putin always together. Did we really expect them to show up to such an upstanding event as this?

It's not hard to boycott French goods. First, French's mustard is actually American, so that's not a problem, and red wine is easy to replace your favorite Californian or Austrailian bottle.

"Gorbechev is going to represent Russia."

I missed that. That's good enough for me.

You are right -- Chirac and Martin have no excuse, they are just doing it exactly just to "show us". But what goes around, comes around. They need us more, than we need them.

Gorby is a saint, as far as I am concerned. The USSR folks seem to know who waxed their asses; I don't know why Putin doesn't come here and join with us and our mourning.

Lady Thatcher was an elegant touching figure as she approached the casket of Ronald Reagan.

Prince Charles, heir to the British throne is a fitting stand in for the Queen. Along with Tony Blair and his wife, the British delegation to honor President Reagan is of the highest level.

The French, on the other hand, seemed to have lost their collective Gallic and galling minds. Chirac will not come, even though he is already in the US for the G8 meeting. So far France has not deigned to send ANYONE to represent theirsupposed "friend and ally". Shame on them.

Uhmm, the Canadian Governor-General is head of state. The PM is just the leader of the party.

Like the difference between George Bush and Bill Frist.

Of all these leaders only Putin has a valid reason not to attend. Besides, he would be upstaged by the presence of Reagan's old pal by the name of Gorbachev.

I live in Savannah, and our paper had an article about when each bigwig arrived at Hunter. Everyone loved Blair and he was really tickled by his reception. Japan's leader bowed to the kids, they bowed back, he kept bowing and laughing. Seems nice, I'm surprised he's not attending the funeral. The guy from Italy ( ? ) - this wad was on his cell phone the whole time. No one was amused. Putin seems to be very under the weather, a cold or something. They said he wasn't feeling well at all, so maybe that's why he's passing. This was from Wednesday's paper, the link is www.savannahnow.com if ya'll want to check it out. :)

I'm glad Chirac won't be there. He's not even worthy of being in the same room with Ronald Reagan's dead body.

Thanks.

Italy's PM, Berlusconi is our strong ally and friend. Give him a break, maybe he had some real pressing issues -- remember they arrested some terrorists just recently, who knows what they were planning. Normally Berlusconi is very friendly.

No offense to Tass or anything, but even in the case of the US it is our VP, not our top 'leader,' that typically attends state funerals of other countries.
