As sympathetic as I am to their plight, I am truly at a loss to know what we can do about it short of give them asylum here. Even though our own Constitution prevents the establishment of a state religion, it could be amended to allow such with a sufficient super-majority. And that is exactly what is present in Iraq. So even if the establishment clause wasn't in the Iraqi constiutution presently it wouldn't be long before it was.
If ever there was a time to set up a system in which these people could live safely within their own country it is now. What is the State Dept thinking.
Christians are a very small minority in Iraq and don't have the political power to gain a foothold in a state where 99% or more are Muslim. Within 5 years, I'm betting Iraq will be a theocracy.
I hope we can give asylum to all of them. I know a few Christian Arabs and they are good, hardworking people.
"As sympathetic as I am to their plight, I am truly at a loss to know what we can do about it short of give them asylum here."
I rather suspect there'll be another Jewish Exodus in the future, too, from Israel. Given them all asylum.
That would be funny. We have to take in refugees from the country we liberated that turned into an unlivable craphole? "Hey, it's the least we can do after we ruined your country. Sorry, no hard feelings, right?"
"We thought the Americans were going to bring us freedom and democracy," said 31-year-old Robert. "Instead, they are promoting Islam. We do not understand it. ... We love the Americans! We are so grateful for them removing Saddam and giving us back our freedom. We do not want their effort to be a failure if the dictatorship of Saddam is replaced by the dictatorship of Islam."
In the end, it's up to the people of Iraq to secure freedom and democracy. Like Dr. Condi Rice said, "We've taken the citizens of Iraq as far as we can take them. now it's up to them to take themselves the rest of the way."
That is just as true here in the USA. Freedom isn't given. Freedom is earned.
That is not an answer. That is giving in to the Islamic fanatics.
Even though our own Constitution prevents the establishment of a state religion, it could be amended to allow such with a sufficient super-majority.
That is another illustration of your partiality. The US is a SUPER MAJORITY Christians, if you demanded that there will be a constitution change that says the religion of the USA is Christian! You will never see the end of it!
As a matter of fact, a few years back there was a famine in Ethiopia, where the population was mostly Christians, and minority Jews; the US air force lifted ONLY the Ethiopian Jews to rescue them to Israel. So much for separation of church and state! I guess the US policies are basically against the Christian religion!
