PARIS - A man reportedly crying "God is great" stabbed a Jewish teenager in the thorax on Friday, seriously injuring the victim, officials said.
The young man, not identified by name, was attacked about 4 p.m. as he left a Jewish school in Epinay-sur-Seine, north of Paris in the rough Seine-Saint-Denis district, officials of the local prefecture said.
The victim was transferred to a hospital and the attacker fled the scene. Interior Minister Dominique de Villepin visited the site where the attack occurred.
Witnesses said a man shouted "God is great" then plunged a knife into him before fleeing.
Prime Minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin denounced the attack, saying he shares "the legitimate indignation of the Jews of France against this barbarous act which touches our entire national community."
Anti-Semitic attacks have been on the rise in France despite a series of measures put in place to counter them. However, physical assaults are less common than attacks on Jewish sites, from synagogues to schools, and desecration of Jewish cemeteries.
The Interior Ministry has reported 67 anti-Semitic acts in the first quarter of 2004, a 60-percent increase from the same period a year earlier.
Young Muslims have been blamed for many of the attacks which, over the past few years, have coincided with rising tension in the Middle East.
However, Muslims have also been victims of racist attacks. In March, an arson fire damaged a mosque and destroyed a Muslim prayer hall in Annecy, in southeast France.

STOP.
You're breaking my heart.

Yes, I think you're right. And it's a huge difference. If it were 'Allahu Akbar' more of that nasty profiling, regardless how true, might occur. And no physical description of the perp or what he was wearing, either.
Well, that was an interesting read. Shades of democrats to come.
It's getting to be a very anticipated hidden tidbit of wanton knowledge one expects via the mainstream press these days isn't it.
A 17-year old yeshiva student was stabbed in the chest by an Arab aggressor Friday afternoon.
Israel Ifrah was attacked on his way from the Mekor Israel yeshiva in Epinay-sur-Seine, a suburb north of Paris, to a nearby grocery shop. The assailant shouted "Allahu Aqbar"(Allah is Great, in Arabic) when he perpetrated the aggression. The attacker left the knife in the youth's chest and tried to hurt two more students with a screwdriver.
Ifrah was taken to hospital. His condition is described as serious but not critical.
CRIF reacted in shock and horror to the aggression. Before this new point was passed, CRIF relentlessly warned the public opinion against this increase of anti-Semitism and against the consequences of laxity.
CRIF cannot but notice that this escalation in violence is taking place right after decisions taken by French courts of justice that could give the impression that Jews were fair game. It is high time for justice to consider anti-Semitism not as an opinion but as a criminal offence.
CRIF demands that the authorities retrieve as quickly as possible the author of this attempted murder and that they punish him with the utmost severity.
CRIF calls on the French nation altogether to confront this rise of anti-Semitism endangering the very bases of our country.
French President Jacques Chirac firmly condemned the aggression. "The public authorities are determined to arrest, judge and condemn the author of this criminal action," said Chirac. The French President added that he was sending a message of solidarity "To the French Jewish community, hit again by an anti-Semitic aggression, unworthy of all the values of France. Tolerance is the cement of the nation. Everyone must strive to defend and preserve this basic value of the nation," concluded the French President.
FRmail me to be added or removed from this Judaic/pro-Israel ping list.
WARNING: This is a high volume ping lis
Give the press a break for crying out loud!
This is an election year and they have their work cut out for them for chances are Dubya will be reelected!
Maintaining focus on stories such as "Lacy" and of course "prisons" in Iraq is the only concern worth their focus at this time.
Thank you FR and the Internet for being a filter remover for the public.
Oh, and thank you Algore for inventing the Internet.
I'm not.
Err no... Allah Akbar translates to Satan is great.
The author, Theodore Dalrymple has a number of excellent essays. His book "Life at the Bottom" is a fascinating ( if depressing ) read.
It is high time for justice to consider anti-Semitism not as an opinion but as a criminal offence.
In a world where HaShem and His Priestly People are acknowledged I would be all for this. However, what is the secular rationale for the criminalization of anti-Semitism? If it is that Jews are a "minority group," what of those other minority groups that are hostile to them? Should prejudice against them be criminalized? If it is that Jews can be recognized as having a special status in a secular world then I must disagree. Secularism did not choose Israel and secularism is not the target of accursed `Amaleq's hatred (rather HaShem is). Moreover to provide a secular justification based on an allegedly unique Jewish victim status goes against the Torah view that Jews should have of themselves as the people who conquered idol worship in 'Eretz Kena`an and who will one day uproot it from all the world. I am afraid the "tolerance" ideology so often offered as the antidote to anti-Semitism instills an indifferentist ideology that is at variance with this world mission.
Jew-hatred will be dealt with properly when the world lies in prostration at the Feet of HaShem (may this happen immediately!). If "tolerance" is impeding this, then it has to go.
It sure is. One almost needs codebreakers to figure out what they mean, unless of course discussing conservatives, then it's let the derisive adjectives fly...
But, shhh, we better watch those 'judgemental' adjectives, the pc police may be watching...
Remember the episode of Seinfeld, I believe it was, where they discussed just such things? It was about how 'we' are all too sensitive and how could we ever give a description to police following a crime, if we couldn't use descriptive adjectives. Would we want them to be searching for a 'person' who took our purse or wallet, or would we prefer that they search for a middle aged white man about 6 feet tall wearing a leather coat? You get the idea...
If I know Frogs they won't condemn this they blame Israel AM I RIGHT
Tht was TRULY a story of why a person should avoid Paris!
Yeah, I noticed that too. Can't identify the perp as a Muslim--better to talk around the issue. Odds are that they'll never even arrest who did it. The "We must not inflame the Muslims" mantra will one day be etched on France's (and maybe Europe's) gravestone.
Your talking out of my realm and you have brought personal focus on my inhibited flow of information.
Where have I gone wrong?
