DH and I were caught up in it. I assume many of the quotes were factual, and if so, then it was not just political posturing on De Gaulle. Except I like the casting of him---making him a puny little weasel. Wasn't he a tall weasel?
Selleck was good!
DH is presently reading "Franklin and Winston", and he said the book speaks of their mutual dislike of DeGaulle.

Pretty factual. Very good show. Monty was played well..just like the snott he was, and Patton actually did what he did, although I dont think he said that after he got into the vehicle with Mims.
It hit me that the one who actually had the final information of "if it was a go" was that poor weatherman. That poor kid sure was under pressure.

Please do West Coast Freepers. This is the best post I've ever had and as I'm a Texan please alter my feelings about Cali.

He was a tall weasel. I'll need to read that book. "In The Time Of The Americans" was really good too.

I remember when Ike came home a hero and politics being politics, he was viewed as a future president. I believe he was courted by the Dems, but when he said he was conservative, their bubble burst! LOL!

You too? What gall DeGaul had. Hah!
I'd have hated to be the weather guy. Actually, I'd have collapsed under the weight of all that responsibility. Thank goodness we had leaders like we did then.

The wind does not blow in Germany, France sucks.

Like I said, it's the small things. At the final meeting, according to Stephen Ambrose, after he heard his final reports from all of the generals, he stood and paced silently for what seemed like forever, before turning and saying 'Let's go.'
Ike is shown meeting with the 101st Airborne in a scene that begins with a screen caption 'D-Day June 6' (I'd swear it said June 6 on screen, but we shall see in the reairings). Of course, that famous meeting took place, and had to take place, on June 5, as the paratroop drops began just after midnight the night of June 5-6.
The 'failure letter' wasn't written in the car, but after the order was given, as he agonized at his portable desk.
I was pleased to see he (accurately) smoked quite a bit.

I didn't think we had anymore Ma and Pa Kettles left, disconnected from the rest of the world. Hard to believe. :)

Excellent film, and we were aggravated by De Gaulle, too! My husband said "The French were the same 60 years ago!"
HA!

Little known trivia,Ike also loved golf,Bobby Jones and Clifford Roberts were instrumental in Ikes' election to President.
Bobby Jones is pictured with his longtime friend and partner Clifford Roberts -- together they created the Masters Tournament and position it to become the major championship it is today. When Cliff Roberts asked a writer why he didn't devote more copy to the other golfers versus the amount allocated to Jones he replied, "There is more news value in a putt missed by Jones than brassie shots being holed out by any other player in the field.

"Still happy to have him mostly on our side, but would like to see a little more solid support."
You know how hard it is for them there Hollywood types to even admit they supported a Republican. So, a small victory is better than nothing.
